My other holiday commission sample. This one features Mabuchi Kou and Yoshioka Futaba from Ao Haru Ride. It's one of my favorite mangas, and one of the only shoujo mangas I've gotten into. I'm really happy about the way this one turned out. The lighting was tricky, and the background is simplified from the original idea. But I think the colors and shapes give a good impression. I struggled with the pose, since I couldn't find good photo reference, so I had to conjure it from my imagination. All in all, a pretty fun piece.
Kou looks so cute, especially with a panda hat. Futaba, as always, is adorable.

As for the contest, I'd prefer to start with a completely original and new concept, and we also have to use the theme of "New Beginnings."

Your ability to bring out the personalities was what struck me, not to use those two characters. The basic idea is that the boy wants a relationship with the girl. She has a poor self-image of herself and so cannot understand why any guy would be interested in her. For the story she should not be too pretty, but have nice eyes and a kind be face. Taking her to a mirror, he makes her look at her reflection while he tells her all of the things he likes about her. She says that her nose is too big (for example), but he says that it sticks out so far because it is begging him to kiss is (which he dies).
Any way, when she finally understands that he does like her, likes her for who she is, she agrees to go out with him, and there is the new beginning.
Other ideas could be a new beginning when one of a couple decides to join his or her love in a new life as vampires or something similar.
The Japanese suitor composing haiku for his unrequited love. Perhaps she has been disgraced in some way, yet he still loves her, and eventually they find a way to a new beginning.
I write a lot of romances starring transgender women, so one where a transwoman agrees to go out on her first date with a man would also be a new beginning.
