Bio: A goddess of the underworld, Apophis embodies the chaos and wanton destruction that plagues the world of the living. Unlike the other Egyptian deities who returned to overthrow the corrupt pharaohs, Apophis has rarely been seen either in historic reality or in the Egypt that encompasses the gods' pocket dimension. Among mortals and even some gods she is thought to be merely myth and superstition, though even these tales are careful to show due respect and contrition, lest they awaken her ire.

Though her origins and motives are shrouded in mystery, it is said that Apophis most desires to break free from her imprisonment in the underworld and rise up against the sun itself. If successful, she would consume all light from the world, plunging existence into the shadows and giving dominion to her and her hellish offspring. Every night brings with it the chilling possibility of Ra's defeat and Apophis' ascension. And so with each setting of the sun, every denizen of Egypt is careful to perform a series of rituals and prayers, hoping the energy of their faith will empower the sun and weaken the serpent.

Apophis' powers are vast. The embodiment of chaos, she is said to command many forms of the elements, from spawning earthquakes to calling down lightning and thunder to even leeching the very warmth from the air. But as a goddess of darkness her true strength lies in the shadows. Under her power, even the dimmest can become a pool of inky blackness that she can grow and manipulate as she chooses. Tales speak of Apophis leaping from shadow to shadow, appearing and vanishing into them at will. Some say she can give them solid form, shaping them to constrict or strangle her prey, and legends tell of hapless victims who were pulled down and into their own shadows, never to be seen again. In the darkest of myths, Apophis can even form the shadows into projectiles and weapons of ice-cold solidified darkness, or even minions she may command.

Equally dangerous day or night, Apophis is able to manifest so long as she can overcome the sealing rituals placed upon her by the worshipers of Egypt. Eclipses are said to foretell a disastrous visit from the goddess, as the prayers were too weak to hinder her. In these cases, only a joint effort by multiple deities have a hope of repelling the serpent.

So here we have another entry for the Egyptverse roster. Amby really wanted to have an evil goddess to use, and thought that a snake one would make for an interesting possibility. She originally had another name in mind, but after some discussion I suggested Apophis rather than villifying another deity. Very happy with the result
