It's true! You have no idea how many "Oh, is she an otter? Is that a fox? IS IT A SKUNK??" I've gotten for this character.

But an animal wearing another (killed) animals fur is like... a human wearing another human's skin as a robe. It feels wrong somehow.

You actually got it right, it's intentional. 
She IS a pirate, and a quite notorious one, for having killed one of the pirate king's sons, a lion. So yes, she is quite literally wearing another person's skin as a trophy.
.....it's just a very unsettling fact people never quite realize.

I'm surprised too, but then again, there are plenty of anthros riding on horses too, which is kind of just as weird when there are anthro horses too.... Kinda like a human riding on an ape, which could be fun if pulled off well I admit, but... but?
I guess sometimes people just don't really think about what they're doing, and just do it because it looks cool.
But yes, fully intentional, and I haven't said much about her story yet because I'm working on turning it into a graphic novel at some point. Wouldn't want to spoil all of everything yet. Don't worry, the story begins not long after she killed the guy, so that's not much of a spoiler. 8)
