Description “This is final warning, Gotham. What I have planned for tomorrow will make all of this look like child’s play”

It’s that time of the year again, the month of spookiness.

So I figured what better way to get into the mood than by drawing Jonathan Crane, aka Scarecrow from DC Comics. Specifically the version from the Batman Arkham games. Even more specifically, the one from the final installment (at least before the rip coming spin off, Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League), Batman: Arkham Knight. Realized that despite being a DC fan, I barely drew anything fanart of DC. So I wanted to fix that.

This piece was a lot of fun to make. I wanted to do a realistic drawing, since I don’t really do it much often. Well it’s not really realistic, it’s more in a comic book style akin to DC, but you get what I mean. Much like my previous pieces, this was done in Procreate.

You could tell that by the looks of this piece, that it took me a long time, and you’d be correct. I originally started this piece late September, as I wanted to gear up for Halloween. But there were major events that delayed the progress of this piece. Not that it mattered, since I had to be really careful with the way I inked it. Due to the Arkham games being in a realistic style, it was really challenging for me. But, I made sure to finish it, much sooner than I expected.

My favourite part was adding in the mask. I obviously chose to draw the Arkham Knight version, but decided to add in the mask from Arkham Asylum. I did this as a reference to the fact that this is the same scarecrow that tormented Batman in that. To add the finishing touch, I drew gas clouds in the form of his iconic fear toxin, with the addition of the flowing eyes, and gas filled mouth. Pretty haunting, am I right?

In case you’re wondering, I’ve played the 3 Batman Arkham games by Rocksteady earlier this year, thanks to the Matt Reeves Batman Film. I’ll probably talk more about my thoughts on those games in another piece, but let me just say I had a blast playing them.

It’s going to sound weird but Scarecrow might be my favourite Batman villain (it’s between him and Killer Croc at the moment). While Batman has a fantastic rogues gallery of villains, including Penguin, Poison Ivy, Bane, Clayface, and of course The Joker, Scarecrow really grew on me. Perhaps it’s my love for Halloween, or maybe just how much I loved his portrayal in the Arkham Games.

In Asylum, his levels were very terrifying, as they capture the horror of Batman, including the fear of his dead parents. He also came with a pretty dope design, which is kind of goofy, but at the same time pretty creepy.

He was cranked up to 11 in Knight, as he not only was the main antagonist of the game, but he also came with terrifying redesign, that makes him look like Ghoul, and even a Zombie. His design in Arkham Knight just might be favourite design of Scarecrow yet.

Interestingly, in Arkham Asylum, he was voiced by Dino Andrade, who also voiced Yo Yo Ma in the English Dub of Stone Ocean (haven’t watched it yet, waiting for it to be complete), some characters in The Loud House, and was even in the Playmobil Movie.

As for Arkham Knight, Scarecrow was voiced by John Noble, who was in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and was Unicron in Transformers: Prime. That part was exciting for me, as I am a humongous fan of Transformers Prime.

It was interesting for Scarecrow to go through a voice change in the Arkham series. While he wasn’t the only character, as we’d see this with Harley Quinn, it’s a fascinating case of recasting. Of course, if you played Arkham Asylum, you’d know why this is the case. Kind of like Leonardo from TMNT 2012. Either way, both actors of scarecrow did an amazing job, scaring the shit out of all of us.

Just want to let you guys know that, while I will probably upload more pieces this month, you should not expect a lot. I’ve been working hard at my new college, and the events that happened in the beginning of the month was too much for me.

But don’t worry everyone, I’m doing just fine.

One more thing to mention, I have another version of this piece that I will hopefully upload later on this month, so keep on the look out for that.

Anything related to Scarecrow is owned by Warner Bros and DC Comics
