Description I finally broke down and did it---I ripped off Brianne and a million other artists out there and created a character profile template. First I drew a generalized body and pose, and then applied the individual characters' clothing and hair. Though I adjusted certain character-specific features, this is not a wholly accurate representation of the character's body type.

Design of Ayla, from a rough idea called The Valley of Seasons. Destined to become a priestess in the Temple of Spring, she is chosen by her people to journey to the Valley of Seasons and set to rights the tumultuous climate when power-hungry Winter stirs up trouble.

I love her..you did a kickass job on this design. How exactly do you create the base, though..and how do you manipulate the change in features across different characters?

Thank you! Actually, I drew the whole basy body digitally, then drew new features/clothing/hair on a new layer above the base. After that, I simply erased the parts of the base body that had been altered, and there you have it. I can't explain it very well...I guess I could draw you an example. As I was telling NC, you can also draw a base body and retrace with new features on a thin sheet of paper.

Well I think every artist with more than a couple chars should use this method to show char designs, it's ultra convenient!

You made a beautiful base, I love the legs and feet especially (I am so AWFUL at feet) and she's a beautiful char. I love her simple design, and warm color scheme.

It is ultra-convenient, and fun, too! I've been bemoaning my lack of character references for months now, and I've really been itching to join some exchanges at PE lately, so this is my initiative to make up for the first and remedy the second! Now, when I join an exchange, I won't have to give just a profile page with no references!

Thank you for the compliments, too. She comes from a primitive people (thus the simplistic design), but that's part of her allure, I think.

Ooh, fun! It's like an Ame-made paper doll ...hey, now THAT would be really fun, seeing as you draw such beautiful bodies. ^^ Ayla looks adorable! The cinnamon-y colors and flowing outfit are luffly.

Sweet, she looks like a character from the Colleen Doran graphic novel Indian Summer. That is such a neat idea. I would never have thought to do that because it's so contrary to my training.

How did you make the template, and what do you do to make alterations?

Drawing digitally as I do makes for altering a template easy-as-pie. I drew the base body in Photoshop, then created a new layer over that onto which I drew the clothing and such. Then I altered the base (erased, adjusted) around the new layer. The same basic concept can be applied to pencil and paper too, though. Drawing a base body and tracing over it on thin paper, I've done that too.

Oh she's very pretty!
She reminds me of a character that would be on Atlantis (but your style is cooler than disney )

Nah- not ripping off. If you credit anyone, it should be Walt Disney or some cartoonists prior to him. Everyone has been doing the templates for a LONG time. It's easy and it's good to see your characters from different angles, how they all look in the same position but different. Cant explain. Anyhow- beautiful! I love her lips and the top is incredible! Neat design!
