I wanted to practice with light and shadows, so I made this. And while I'm at it I might as well share my opinion on something fans have been discussing for a while now: Sunset's element.The Elements of Harmony have been out of the picture for a while now, but it's still nice to speculate what Sunset's element would've been. A lot of people seem to go with "Empathy", which I totally get. It suits her personality and the role she has been playing and it matches her mind-reading powers. But I think we can go one step further. Sunset doesn't only understand the feelings and problems of others, she also guides them to a solution.
If we think back to everything she's done after the first movie: she was the one who got the Rainbooms to stop fighting and unite against the Dazzlings, she brought Twilight back from the dark, she helped the Rainbooms understand and use their new superpowers and she's guided pretty much every "villain" they reformed to a better life.
So a fitting element would be "Guidance". Which doesn't only suit her, but also matches her demon/phoenix/fire-thing she's got going on.
"Guiding light in the dark" and all that.

However, the creators of the show have made some pretty good arguments for her element being "empathy", and I like that one as well, so let's go with the "official" version.

She didn't understood friendship 'till now after 1st Equestria Girls thanks to me when I've followed her for the crown. And I'm very proud for how much kind, friendly, helpful, understanding and heroic she have became when it comes with a solution around people at any costs. She IS the heart as well as key of light and darkness. Not only she's "queen of the Rainbooms" since she have earned being true leader of the band, but she's also the "Princess of Guidance". I mean, my big sister like her is the heroine of Equestria Girls franchise after all. Glad I was there for her to be changed and know who she is, because if I'd never became the princess of friendship and helped her to see and learn what true meaning of friendship is all about, how she would've become "Element of Guidance"? I did help my friends especially in Equestria a lot to learn about friendship, and now it's Sunset's turn. Even her and my teacher Celestia is proud of her. *squee*
That's Sunset Shimmer I know. I hope her element's name will be official. So yeah, since I'm the princess of friendship, she'll be the princess of guidance, am I right? ;-D

Aside it being a very lovely picture, I like your theory. It has support to it, and I think Sunset just needed a little bit of that herself, in order to find her true self.

I like it much more than "Empathy" - which seems for me kinda far-fetched - the symbolism in it is really great. Also the way You write about it is quite similar... to way I explain different Element for her. Element, which - like Twilight - has double meaning (Twilight Element represents not only Magic, but also Friendship... which fits really well because... well Friendship is Magic...).Β
I mean Element of Forgiveness/Redemption. Well actually there isn't perfect translation of this into english. The forgiveness part is easy, this second... well there isn't proper translation of Polish term "nawrΓ³cenie" into English. Literally it would be "conversion", but in English this term seems to not have any moral value actually, meaning just changing faith, or maybe even not necesserily faith, but still could be into good or wrong. In Polish... although it is connected with changing faith this isn't the essence of the term, neither must be used in that context. It mainly mean turning from evil into good. Leaving behind sins, bad deeds and starting new life as a better person. And that perfectly fits Sunset! It's not only what happened to her but also something in which she helped other (like Twilight, but some other EG villian to, even if not alone... but hey, Twilight great deeds also wasn't all just her, right?). Because redemption is... kinda similar in meaning - though as far as i understand the word is not exactly the same - I usually go with it when talking about it in English.Β
Also Redemption and Forgiveness, are stronly connected when You think about it a little more. They are kinda like two sides of the same coin, therefore making perfect complet for next double meaning Element... and there couldn't actually better idea for the Seventh, last Element (due to number symbolism I think Seven Elements is the perfect number of them).Β
And I don't think redemption is "limiting" her. We sohouldn't forget, that meaning of the Element isn't neccessery just this what we think at the first time when hearing that word. Elements seem to usually go beyond it's simple meaning. It is most visibly with laughter - which is actually far beyond than just make other ponies/people laugh or smile. This is in some way "core" of the Element, its most promiment manifestation but it don't limits only for that.Β
Though I must admit, Guidance is something that arguably fit Sunset even better. Just it doesn't seem fit the Elements so well, isn't such perfect fulfilment of the Elements (similar feeling I have about Empathy or Healing... Hope... well actually too, but it's the closest to fitting from this four) - but maybe just for me. It's my idea after all so I can be a little not objective.

Not bad, Crydius. She is definitely more fitting to be the element of guidance. Though I would also say she has the element of courage, as most of the thing she has done, such as talk down to her enemy that has the potential to maw her in half in a split seconds, definitely fits that.

Courage is another good one. And something I think is one of the many things that fall within this "Guidance". After all, one needs courage to guide another.

i alway viewed her element would be determination because of her ambition, dedication and occasionaly stubborn actions. i would also fit her good/evil duality thing as it sound more greyish morally

Starlight doesn't seems to have one, not that I'm aware of until this date. Though if I may add, she has the characteristic of a leader, or more accurately, persuasion, because she can talk someone out to do her task before she reformed, like how she persuaded the mane 6.

3rdempathy is nice but the guidance is interesting and i good tie over for she was once lost herself and with guidance she find her way to who she is meant to be a better her thanks to her friends to her love her tiwlight now its her turn to guide those whoa re lost to find a better path they never knew

I'd stuck by with Sunset's element being Forgiveness, but after reading of how her element would be Guidance. I think that actually fits the bill, as Guidance, to me, has parts of Forgiveness, Hope and Redemption, and I think all of this really fits well. Good Job dudeΒ .Β Β Β

Lovely picture, and interesting discussion. I'd still go with Element of Redemption. Sunset isn't quite a Christ-figure, but there's a very religious aspect to her story arc, for me. Your idea is interesting though.Β

A beauty of a pic and an interesting theory for her element... To be honest I always thought it was either empathy, redemption or hope...
Hope? You really think I represent such a concept?
It kinda fits in my opinion, considering that when we really loose hope is when we are at our darkest moments but when we find it it guides us yo do and BE the best we can. Like Pandora from the "God of War 3" said 'Hope is what makes us strong, it is why we are here. It is what we fight with when all else is lost'. The Blue Lantern Corps oath also says it 'In Fearful Day, in Raging Night.Β With strong hearts full, our souls ignite. When all seems lost in the War of Light.Β Look to the stars, for hope burns bright!"'

"Hope" is another good one. Though just like with "Empathy" I think we can go beyond just that. I always found Sunset's strength lay within her actions, in that she does more than just understand or give you hope. She helps you move toward the right path.

It could be that she embodies some concept that is so open to interpretation that it does all of the above, just like "Magic"... Oh! How about "Faith"? Though similar, it is different than "Hope".

Also, Sunset and Starlight appear to be each other's counterparts (despite both coming from Equestria). With their similar origins and roles, there's a definite implication that the Elements of Harmony produce little "pseudo-Elements" or "honorary Elements" over time.
