Um, don't those two have more of a mother-daughter relationship? Also there's a pretty significant age difference, especially given that one of them is in highschool. All things considered, I'd say Sunset's reaction is pretty mild. Also, EQG established that Spike can talk in this world. How's he doing?

Actually, these are Equestria Twilight and Celestia, so the situation's a little different. Age is weird in Equestria. In the human world they're all teens, but in Equestria they all have jobs and their own houses and stuff. Plus no matter how much time passes (we've had like 5 Hearth's Warming Eves) nobody seems to age. It's hard to tell how old everyone is. For all we know ponies can grow up to hundreds of years old and Alicorns just happen to grow even older. And with Twilight being an Alicorn herself now, I found the ship to work rather well.
As for Spike, well, I've yet to run into a situation where I really need him. In the original series he's usually the comic relief, and since my comics focus on humor so much, I haven't really needed him for that. Or any other role for that matter.

That still doesn't change the depiction of a mother daughter relationship in the show. Not saying that disqualifies the ship, only that it makes it all the weirder.

If Twilight didn't have a mother of her own, I'd agree with you. She does though, so it never really felt that way to me. If anyone, it was Sunset that had the most mother-daughter sort of relationship with Celestia, as to this day we know nothing of her parents.
