Finally got around to posting this
This is my chalk work I did for this year's Cleveland Chalk Festival. Took me too full days (11-5pm) to finish this! I feel like that huge amount of time taken was not just the artwork's fault. It was HOT and there was very little shade on the dark sidewalk so kneeling down for hours at a time on stone baking in the sun was rough. Thankfully I had a cooler full of cold waters and cucumber slices that I chowed down like a monster. The art museum also provided us with a water hose to not only wash our chalky hands off with, but to cool ourselves too. Some years this event is freezing cold, others it's steaming hot. There never seems to be a day where the temperature is just right.
Drawn in 100% chalk pastel! These are not your school yard chalks. A combination of small chalk pastels and larger street pastels that I order from Michigan. They can be ground up into a fine power and mixed with water to be applied like paint (perfect for detailing). The large pastels also blend like butter and fill every little pit in the sidewalk making for a smooth and nicely-blended finish. I absolutely love these things!
Chalk art from me has been so lacking this year. I just can't seem to find the time to get out and draw and when I do find the time, the weather isn't right. Oh well.
Every year I try to up my game from the previous year so this time I used painters tape to help separate elements in the piece. It worked great! How am I going to top this piece? I'm not sure yet. I may go bigger next year (maybe two large areas instead of one).
I also may try to experiment with fluorescent chalks (yes, that Michigan company has UV reactive chalks), but this would only be a home driveway project because...you don't want to walk around the east side of Cleveland at night...you just don't.

that is so beautiful. it's so detailed, I didn't think you could get such detail with chalk. it looks like it could just come out of the pavement.

With regular play chalk it would be really hard to get this kind of detail or blending. Chalk pastels have more pigment and are perfect for these kinds of things
