Ron technically did do something important--- he was the one that stood up to sirius when the trio is in the shrieking shack thinking sirius was going to murder harry ("If you want to kill harry you'll have to kill us too!"****
So yeah, there's that awesome Ron moment.
***Not to be mislead by Steve Kloves' utter butchering of that scene in the movie.
