Interesting focal point, though; a sultan, a sewer king, and a would-be empress. All the not-really-royals (a sultan is more like a governor or lord than a king).

He is a interesting character as he isn't good per say but he sure as all that isn't evil.
He tried to hang them but he helps them when they are friends of his friend

I think he is more of a guy who does what he needs to survive. Let's be honest, considering the way Frollo persecuted his people...
And he tried to hang there because he couldn't allow them to live after they had found out their hideout. As far as he knew, Phoebus and Quasimodo were under Frollo's orders (everyone knew Phoebus was the captain of the guard). When Esmeralda explained that he was the official who had helped that family and Quasimodo had helped her, then it was alright, he trusted them.
Not a hero type of guy, but not a villain.

THe whole bit with Meg in the background took me until that second-to-last frame to notice. I had to go back and watch the whole thing unfold.
