The Skillen

Height: Skillen are roughly the size of a large cheetah, which places it at about 3 feet at the shoulder
Weight: 150-190 lbs
Lifespan: 25 years
Diet: Carnivore

Origin of Name/Discovery:
Skillen were found on the same trip wherein Akedi Handon found the Seliphid. Named much more on whim than the Seliphid themselves were, Skillen doesn't really mean anything.

Appearance and Personality:
Skillen are slender, almost to the point of emaciation by default, houndlike creatures. There is a 'gil crest' behind their jaw which they can use to filter oxygen from liquids, a necessary evolution on their waterlogged planet, though they live solely on land. They have a long horn that extends off the back of the head and protects the back of the neck, and between 2-6 large, rounded spines on their back. The number of spines seems to be random, though males on average have more than females. Their pawpads extend up and around the toes. Despite their rather frail appearance, they are actually quite hardy creatures.

Language:
Skillen communicate in growls and yips

Intelligence and Emotional Capacity:
They are highly trainable, though their mouths are usually bound shut (as seen) during hunts to keep them from eating their prey. Some older and more restrained Skillen do not need this though.

Reproduction and young:
Skillen reproduce in the usual way. They have been heavily domesticated, so the males are usually reserved for studding while the females care for 3-5 kips. (babies) The gestation period is 4-5 months, depending on the Kefla (mother).

Health:
Skillen are susceptible to bone diseases, and can suffer breaks if not properly cared for. While generally healthy, they can also have respiratory problems if their gil crests are not kept clean (something they would usually take care of themselves in the wild.

Skillen are a heavily domesticated hunting pet owned by the Aen.
