Maybe you should also feature the same color scheme for his body as well? At least, it's rare to see such way to draw membranes.

It's your idea, go what you think he (or an egg) should look like. If I have to say, I think that would be awesome to have his scales detailed with the same dappling on the edge; just not to overdo it.

Oh wow, now that would be intricate! As you say, the trick would be in not overdoing it. I've not done detailed scales before. Sounds like a challenge! Thanks for the suggestions

By how not to overdo it, here's a way: Do not use more than 4 base colors for a dragon's color scheme; Avoid geometric pattern; For drawing scales, avoid drawing lines between them. Hope it could helps.
