Hasbro doesn't want you to like it, there ditching the popular animation of FIM to lose the brony base. They market to children and don't want there product mingling with the 18-35 demographic. It's is a threat to their overall product. If parents watch some of the fan fics and shorts created by adult fans they may not want their child to watch FIM. That can impact toy sales and advertising revenue. While I don't agree with this and feel any publicity is good publicity and that revenue can be generated in different ways, I do believe this is why they are going to Equestria Girls.

Maybe, maybe not. It took me some viewings to see that Spike appears to follow Twilight in the swirl. So maybe he crosses over as well. That might explain why Twilight never seems to be apart from Spike the Dog in the trailer.
