Explain to me, the odds of somepony named Lyra getting a cutie mark of a Lyre!

Let's ignore the Apple family for a moment, since name and occupation seems to run in the family. The same goes for their relatives, the Oranges. And let's also ignore Celestia and Luna, since controlling the sun and moon could very well be a thing that the royal family is expected to do.
The odds of a pony named Lyra getting a cutie mark of a lyre are just as likely as:
A pony named Rainbow Dash having a special talent of flying fast.
A pony named Fluttershy having a cutie mark of butterflies, and just happening to be shy.
A pony named Photo Finish becoming a photographer.
A pony named Trixie whose special talent is performing magic tricks.
A pony named Heartstrings getting a cutie mark of a stringed instrument.
Ponies named Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon getting cutie marks that are a diamond tiara and a silver spoon.
Ponies named Snips and Snails having scissors and a snail as their respective cutie marks.
A pony named Golden Harvest having a cutie mark related to gardening.
A pony named Mr. Breezy having a fan for a cutie mark.
A pony named Daisy/Flower Wishes having a cutie mark that's daisies.
A pony named Rose whose cutie mark is a rose.
A pony named Sheriff Silverstar, who may have only been Silverstar before he became a sheriff, having a silver star as a cutie mark.
A pony named Peachy Pie having peaches for a cutie mark.
A pony named Sunny Daze getting a cutie mark that's a sun.
A pony named Berryshine getting a cutie mark that's berries.

These are all officially named ponies.
Hasbro doesn't care how logical it would be to have a name based on a cutie mark they shouldn't know about yet. The only thing Hasbro cares about is whether or not the name can be trademarked, and how easy it is to defend that trademark.
The Transformers wiki even has an entire article dedicated to Hasbro's affinity for making names ridiculous enough to be trademarked, including characters who have had their official names changed because Hasbro decided the original name wasn't as easy to defend as a trademark.

Well, half of those could be nicknames, but I guess you have a point.
However only a few of them have names that are identical to their cutie mark. Besides, I'm saying it's unlikely, not impossible. With the rate the fans name characters directly after their cutie marks...well...that's my point.
Though I hope whatever names they do use are better than whatever the fans came up with, because let's face it, there's a reason the phrase, "design by committee" is considered an insult.

Well, she's called Rose in-show and her toy was named Roseluck. The real reason, once again, is trademark issues. But it makes perfect sense to assume that her name is Roseluck and that she's just called Rose for short, just like how many of the main characters don't call each other by their full name all of the time.
As for the fans' naming trends, MLP characters have been named that way even in the older generations, especially in the toy line, so the fans are just following the apparent naming trends that ponies have had for years. In fact, many of the fan-named ponies, such as Bon Bon, were simply named after similar older generation ponies.

The official name is Heartstrings. But some members of the fan community have refused to acknowledge this and thought placing Heartstrings as her surname was "middle ground." Even though it doesn't resolve the name/cutiemark problem.

Why not? She has a candy-themed cutie mark; if you ask me, a sweets-inspired name would be in the context of the show ... I mean toy line.

...well no. That's my point. The reason she shouldn't have a candy-themed named is precisely because she has a candy-themed cutie mark. I'm not rewriting this so this is a reference to Lyra Heartstrings.
- For starters, letβs talk about the name βLyra.β Given said character has a cutie mark of a lyre, and Lyra is a constellation of a lyre, thatβs one hell of a coincidence. A pony get their cutie mark once theyβve learned what their unique talent is, which doesnβt happen very early in life. So, that means her parents would have named her Lyra, and one of either two things happened: a massive coincidence meant she loved playing the lyre, and got a cutie mark of it. Or, her parents forced her to play the lyre because they wanted her name to match her cutie mark. Like one of those parents who force their kid to play the violin. βYouβre gonna play it and youβre going to like it!!!β
So that would be odd, itβs like if Pinkie Pie was actually named Balloons. So giving her a name that has little to do with her cutie mark makes a lot of sense. Besides, everyone knew βLyra,β like all fan-made names, was merely a placeholder. A name we could use to quickly and easily refer to a particular pony that otherwise didnβt have a name. But now she has a proper name, granted by the copyright holders. We no longer need to use the placeholder name, we can use the name dictated by an official source: Hasbro!

That's a very well-argued point. Now that I think about it, perhaps some cutie mark/name correlations (Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash) aren't such big coincidences after all. I was just going to chalk it up to a flawed gimmick in the show

Well, Applejack's an exception. Her family's called "Apple" and they run an apple farm. As for everyone else, very few have cutie marks that are identical to their names. I'm saying it's unlikely, not impossible.

yeah, the thing with Rainbow Dash would have been because her mane was rainbow, and both her and Twilight's names are probably Twilight/rainbow as their first names, and Sparkle/dash as their surnames.

humans didn't have surnames for a long time. you were just thor son of odin until someone shortened it. that or it was your nickname. perhaps her family is like the Apple family considering her comment about being "Rainbow "Danger" Dash" in the last episode. also, pinkie's family has Pie as their surname. my point is that, while surnames are not intrinsically entwined with their culture, they DO exist.
