Okay. I take my comment about the eyes back. But even after the change they still move cross. Just not aaaall the time. And as an occasionally appearing back ground pony in between Episode 1 and 15, she came without the wall eyes too, and people loved her.
I have no idea, how Derpy will appear in future episodes. But I think, chances are that she will still be there. Not just as extreme. And with a little luck, someone in the round of the political correctness commitee of Hasbro will learn what "derp" actually means and give an Okay for the name.

True, it did take some time before they started adding her derpy eyes. But people loved her because of that first appearance, it made her interesting and unique. She probably wouldn't ever have achieved her fandom status if it weren't for that. Even in fanfictions where she doesn't have constantly derped eyes, they're still there in some form. Imagine if they went back and underped her eyes in ep1? Except this is worse, because her appearance in the Last Roundup was a direct gift to us, not accidental. And it's caused so much consternation and raised ethical issues, instead of being universally loved, as was intended.
We've been told that Derpy will still have walleyes in future episodes by an animator, as she appears in the background as she has in all other episodes. So thankfully she hasn't been dropped altogether. But I can bet you that Studio B/DHX will have to be much more careful now in it's shout out to fans (if they even bother to anymore in their production for season 3), especially if Hasbro have felt threatened by possible lawsuits (nothing but a rumour of course). And they will never have her talk again. I know we didn't expect her to talk at all, but now? Say goodbye to any hope of that happening again.
It's a breach of trust between the studio and the fans. It's easy to imagine them saying "well if this is how we are treated when we include stuff for fans, it's just not worth the hassle".
If the problem was just a legal issue regarding the name, as I can understand given the etymology of the word, then they'd have no need to change her voice and eyes. This was caused by offended parties, despite them being roughly a 5-10% minority, who voiced concerns on behalf of handicapped people, who, from my viweings of comments, never wanted their defence at all, and mostly loved Derpy and her appearance.
I want to apologise if sound harsh, or if it sounds like I'm directing all this at you, it seems I am more emotionally invested in Derpy than I had realised, and have little to no chance to vent.

I think, I understand your feelings very well and I don't feel attacked by you or anything like that.
The only thing I wanted to point out is that I am not that sad about the changes (Except the name removal). I find it weird and a little worrysome, but my opinion *was* that fans overreacted.
Your input however made me think further. But besides writing letters with questionable effect, I don't know what we could do besides waiting what the producers will do. Waiting and behaving like bronies should behave.
Let us show them that we are worth the hassle. That means acting as usual, writing fan stories, cheering publically about the episodes, making comics and buying the merchandise.

WizardWannabe In reply to TenaKitten [2012-02-28 12:45:32 +0000 UTC]
That's good.
Agreed, fans have overreacted in some ways, especially in their vitriol towards Yamino.
If I remove my emotions from the equation I do still find this whole thing worrysome for two reasons. 1) This is corporate censorship, which, as someone who wishes to get into the childrens animation industry myself, disturbs me greatly. I can only imagine how Jason Thiesson and everyone at Studio B felt about it. As artists, it is abhorrent. 2) By editing Derpy, Hasbro validated the complaints of offence to the handicapped, admitting that Derpy was indeed a handicapped character. By removing her 'handicapped' aspects, they made her 'normal' and 'acceptable' to be on tv. This is more offensive than her original depiction ever was. You wouldn't do that to a character in a wheelchair.
At this point, I don't think letters or petitions will have any effect. They didn't the first time around, before we knew they were going to edit it. Hasbro will not recind their decision, they've already paid to have the scene edited. Their bottom line is avoiding lawsuits and bad press. Regardless of our actions, the damage is done.
Indeed, we shall continue in our fanworks and support for the show and merchandise. Hopefully, this incident will not pain the relationship we have with the show's team. I fear it has bruised it, however.

I heard from one of the animators that the original Derpy is still gonna be the same background character from the show's beginning. Maybe the world isn't ready to hear her speak yet.

Well, as much as I'd hate to say it, I honestly don't fell that this 'save Derpy' business is really necessarily.
Here's how I see it. The last time I checked, the original Derpy scene and the entire original last round up are still on YouTube. If Hasbro really wanted to entirely censor Derpy, they would have taken down the other Derpy videos as well. So by allowing the Derpy scene to remain, it is essentially Hasbro saying in de facto that they have no intention of wiping Derpy from existence. Since YouTube is often renowned as the 'beating heart' of the brony community, the scene is still ours and ours to keep. Derpy isn't dead, nor she ever will be. Yes, the scene may be edited, but the original gift still remains in our hands. Plus, the first wave of 'save Derpy' saved all the Derpy merchandise on We Love Fine. That is not going anywhere.
had a good journal about this. I think the real test to see if Derpy got censored would be if the edited version shows on the Hub. Again, I still wouldn't think that really would matter as the originals will always be on YouTube.
Anyway, that is just my two cents.

The only reason for censoring Derpy was because Apple wouldn't sell it because she wasn't "politically correct."
Hasbro employees who work on the show still love and adore her, and will continue to place her in the background.
The DVD version of the episode remains the same. so to the Fans and Staff she is Derpy Hooves, but to those of whom on iTunes and at Apple, and whoever complained, she's still the nameless pony that they probably couldn't care less for.

14-Spades In reply to Dorkahontas [2012-02-27 03:18:04 +0000 UTC]
True, but the people who couldn't care less about her still maybe fans of the show. Kids, mothers, fathers, grandparents, teachers, those kinds of people. It isn't just us out there.
Though I do agree with you, censoring Derpy doesn't seem necessary.

I'm pretty sure Derpy is fine, for the rest of this season that is.
One of the animators confirmed that everything is alright. I'm more worried about people flipping their shit and spamming Hasbro giving them more incentive to look down on us and tighten the screws for Studio B unless those messages are done tastefully and respectable, but knowing this fandom..... >_>
Also agree that this was a dick move by iTunes, the clip sounded butchered too, I don't even think that was RbD's voice actress. She didn't sound very Dash like to me.
And another thing DERPY is not going anywhere if you think about it. FANON Derpy is perfectly safe we control what happens to her in our art and comics, Canon Derpy, though, even if she gets like one of two seconds of screentime in Season 3, I'll be fine with that.

I actually find it hilarious; when she first spoke so many people were complaining about how she sounded mentally disabled and that it was somehow offensive.
But now that they've changed her, everyone is complaining about that...
So I really don't care. Either way, not everybody is going to be happy.
But I love this picture! It's wonderful. <3

"please help save Derpy, there's lots of petitions you can sign and mails you can write to Hasbro (spam the fuck out of their servers!) "
No matter how many times I say it or see it said, people still mindlessly blame Hasbro. ONLY the iTunes episode was changed.

Did people even read this? I'm starting to think I made a mistake getting into the show no matter how many times I repeat myself that fans of any kind can blindly and retardadly flip out over things no matter how nonsensical it is!

I don't think petitions hold any ground against the threat of being sued, and spamming Hasbro with emails is only going to make things worse, but hey, at least I won't have to blame myself when it ends up backfiring on us.
One thing people seem to have forgotten is how amazing it was for Derpy to be named and to have her talk. Most couldn't believe how wonderful it was, simply because such extreme fan service is something we seldom see nowadays because of the risks involved. Now many are taking this event for granted, and are pissed that it's being (understandably) censored. Remember the day the episode aired, the excitement you felt, realize -why- you felt that way.
Besides, most fans already have the uncensored version of 'The Last Roundup', and it simply is impossible to prevent it's distribution. New casual fans won't be offended, new hardcore fans will seek out the 'true' version and marvel, and those that were fans before already knows what voice she has. What did we lose? Nothing, why are you all arguing?

Just gotta ask, do we know for sure it's because she was offensive? Or that Hasbro's the ones that made the choice? It might have been iTunes that declared she was offensive, or Hasbro might have had her changed because they can't legally use Derpy. (Copyright laws are fun!)

Huh, he does suggest that she was offensive. Whelp, so much for the optimistic view. Oh well, I'll just get my hands on a first-run copy of the Friendship Express DVD. Besides, even though they changed her they still can't touch the good intentions of Studio B. They reached out to us and even if it didn't work out as they might have wanted it to I still think they're great for trying.

Donitz In reply to BGKyouhen [2012-02-26 18:05:30 +0000 UTC]
According to most sources I've found they state that you can not copyright a short word like derp, so I doubt that was the issue.
π: 0 β©: 1
BGKyouhen In reply to Donitz [2012-02-26 19:27:31 +0000 UTC]
They can't copyright the word 'derp', but they can copyright a grey pony with a yellow mane and eyes that is walleyed and has bubbles on her flank, who is also quite accident prone and named Derpy. The problem is the fans pretty much built that personality, so Hasbro can't use her.
π: 0 β©: 1
Donitz In reply to BGKyouhen [2012-02-26 21:03:52 +0000 UTC]
Well they could probably copyright that. But that's entirely within their power, since they created her. Hasbro didn't necessarily use her fanon personality, and even if they did that is in all likelihood not enough material for a lawsuit.

it's not like people are being banned from having headcanons or doing fanfiction.
it's just one scene from one episode. bronies get their way all the damn time with this show.
they get everything from having their ocs inserted to getting their otps hinted at.
i can't help but see every "SAVE DERPY" picture and video as one big tantrum about about being told "no" for once.

Drawing beautiful art like this, and reminding why we loved Derpy so much in the first place is what really keeps her alive. By sharing something like this with the rest of the fandom it really does help bring her back to her roots.
Now if only that amazing guy that did the Carrot Top and Derpy comics would come back and release a new arc <3
Nice to see you care Madmax! *hugs* I hope all these works and such some how reach Hasbro and the team at Studio B that we loved their original shoutouts to the fans and we will continue to do our thing with or without their including her in their canon world.
Though I really think Derpy would have been a strong role model potential for those living with handicaps. Sure she derped Twon Hall but it was a silly mistake derp~ she has been shown to be more then capable through out all of 2 seasons so far!
Derpy Hooves or Ditzy Doo, Bright-eyes or Bubbles, she's special and I don't expect new fans or those with tunnel vision to understand why the change was such an travesty. It sent out so many negative messages about how it's best to treat things as if people and ponies with handicaps don't exist, that they have no place in media or should be a part of public society. If you can't change to be a part of the social standard then you are shunned from the public eye.
That's is the real issue, others have other opinions but that's what is talked about most.
Sorry for the long posty Max *hugs* great work as always, that picture really makes me feel happy just staring at such great scenery and a peaceful looking Mailmare enjoying a quick break under the sun with a light breeze brushing over her coat and mane.. You do know she isn't gone right? She was only edited for the ITunes version because they would not let Hasbro sell the original on their site. Derpy is still intact on TV and DVD...I even watched the episode on Demand today on Comcast and she was not changed. Also one of the Show Animators spoke out and told the community that Derpy will be same old Derpy in future episodes. So there is nothing to worry about.

But, will doing this actually change anything? Angrily throwing rocks in the air because we don't know what is going on will just end with the rocks falling back down on us which is probably why Derpy was changed in the first place. Wait until we know more about why and then throw the rocks in that direction.
Awkward analogy, but I think it gets the point across.
