It's not too unbelievable that Spartans drank horse milk. I mean, it only sounds strange since it's unheard of, but really, what makes horse milk any less appealing then cows milk?
Also, while that true story has never happened to me, I know people who have had that happen to them. It's less rare of an occurrence then one would think.

While it may not be technically illegal, there is no FDA-approved distribution, and thus most of it is done via ebay and similar means. So, maybe not "black market", but still somewhat "underground".

Not realy, food products have to be inspected for health reasons. If you were buying human milk you wouldn't know if it's comming from a meth addict, someone with a transmitmitable disease, or just some housewife trying to get some extra bucks to stretch the food budget.
If they are bypassing the food and drug administration to sell it. It's illegal

I suppose that makes sense. If they had the people run certain tests before giving the milk then they could only approve whatever milk passes the test, and sell that. Sounds safe to me.
I still wouldn't drink it, though. It seems sort of weird. I might drink pony milk.

Oddly enough, ultra-pasteurized milk tends to taste sweeter, due to the heat breaking down complex molecules into simpler molecules that are, in fact sweeter to our palate. I've had goats milk. It's pretty good! We had goats on our farm when I was a kid, so every day, we milked the goats, filtered the milk, cooked the milk (pasteurizes it), and used that for both drinking and cooking.

First of all I said ONE of the dumbest theories I've ever heard not the dumbest theory I've ever heard. Second, your retort "You're the dumbest I've ever heard" is awful and suggest you don't have anything to back your theory. Third; what the dairy
industry does is pick the milk up from dairy farms; remove fat for 2%,1% and skim milk; adding flavor to flavored milk; and package whole milk and all of the above for the market meaning to whole milk or any other kind of milk to ruin the taste. Don't asumtions about the milk we drink just because someone points out that brest milk (which is from HUMANS)is sweeter than cow milk.
I don't know if anyone still drinks mare's milk so I can't answer that.

I probably could have backed up my theory, but I was lazy and saw the opportunity for that joke. I like the enthusiasm in your response, though. Very factual, and it made a lot of good points.
Anyways, I'm almost sure that factories process the milk to keep any sort of parasites or germs in the cows from getting to us, and in the process changes the flavor somewhat.
