He might be back... It'll be a matter of time... Perhaps...
This is so cute, though, even if Flutterbitch has some... "interesting" sexual tendencies.

Alas, it seems our best candles flicker for only so long.
Discord was a vision of the future, and he represented this with his ideals. Unfortunately, they were ideals presented to plebians, who were unable to comprehend the true, beneficial future they entailed. And thus, they fizzled, as ideas, no matter how powerful, can only fail when not supported on the backs of the people (or ponies).
When he presented Rainbow Dash with a choice that appeared to be a "lose-lose", it was, in fact, a "win-win" of the highest order. True, his choice was presented in such a way that Dash had no choice but to betray her element, but it was merely the price to pay for what should have been her most valuable lesson: to prioritize, to not pledge loyalty to what could be conflicting elements, and to safeguard the few she truly had.
To Rarity, who had a fascination for all things sparkly, she was given the lesson of the true value of gems. The gigantic gemstone she thought was shiny and full of value was just an ordinary rock, one she nevertheless obsessed over unearthing for herself. Discord's lesson was intended to teach her that ordinary earthy rocks and gemstones truly held the same value, in that appearance isn't everything. While gemstones were shiny, they held no good qualities beyond that. In that sense, they may as well have been of the dull, earthy tones of the rocks she overlooks by the thousands on a daily basis.
And Pinkie Pie, who was graciously taught the possibility that her eternally bubbly, giggly personality may in fact be her downfall one day. One cannot possibly go through life with such an idealistic, optimistic outlook on life -- such is insanity. She holds down realism with everything she does; her actions defy reality, and her thought processes defy rationality. Recall the very first moment she believed her friends did not like her parties; she, unfamiliar with the feelings of depression, descended into full-blown madness. Only through repeated exposure to the harsh cruelties of life could she truly see that idealism, like the realism she tries to subdue at every turn, is best kept at a healthy balance.
Then Applejack, who was taught the virtues of lying, which was ironically perhaps the greatest truth she had ever been told. Much like the annoyingly close-minded little kid tries something new and, seeing that he cannot master it on his first attempt, chucks it aside and wrongly declares it lacking, Applejack never saw these benefits, but only because she is a terrible liar herself. Discord only meant to show her the possibility that honesty may in fact not be the best policy, and to show her the benefits of thinking through her actions, to consider what is really the best method to do something.
Critics would perhaps point to his hypnosis of Fluttershy when she refused to open her mind, but it was only because she was the most brainwashed of them all. Meek, and unwilling to speak out for herself throughout her life, she allowed herself to be influenced by Trollestia's regime in ways even the others couldn't have been. Fluttershy simply could not see the face value and the malevolence present in her friends' criticisms of her. Discord saw obstacles in showing her the light that he did not see in the others and, finding himself unable to convince her in any other way, had to resort to magic. It was, some would say, a "dirty trick", but a well-intentioned one all the same.
And, lastly, there is Twilight Sparkle, who, through the "power of friendship", started as a capable, booksmart student and gradually degraded in intelligence until she failed, in one instance, to realize that poking her eye with her hoof would, in fact, hurt. Discord had only good intentions in turning her friends against her; friendships, as easily as they are built, are just as easily destroyed, and the sheer impermanence of it only proves that it is not something to fully rely on. In doing so, Discord would restore Twilight's faith in the concept of self, something far more reliable than any illogical feelings of mutual affection. Friendship was much like a drug in her case. Unfortunately, she was too far gone already, as shown when she saw all of this for herself for the first time. Without the narcotic-like tendencies of friendship, and her friends acting as the enablers, she immediately backed down, surrendering without so much as a hint of her own willpower.
All six cases are truly tragic; all of them innocent products of a misled society. What truly cannot be forgiven are the actions of Equestria's ruler -- and the mindset behind them. Trollestia, normally calm and appearing to be in control of every situation, confident in her omnipotence, acted noticeably more distraught once she learned of the only power capable of threatening her colorful dystopia.
By twisting the universe into chaos, Discord wanted only to see the pony species truly benefit -- a form of natural selection, if you will. For too long, this winnowing had been a non-factor, and they all suffered for it, if their constant problems are any indication. These ideas, obviously implemented by Trollestia in a bid to stunt their progress for good, and the bad intentions behind them, went unnoticed by the general populace. When confronted with the possibility that they were being misled, the ponies, in all their ignorance, only clung harder to the so-called "ideals" of friendship. Because of this developmental damage, it was, unfortunately, only a matter of time before Trollestia regained control of the situation, as the "good guys" always do, and poor Discord -- and all of his visions and philosophies entailed -- paid the price for her ignorant methods of tyranny.

Discord should have stayed around, perhaps reigning over a small area of the Everfree Forest. Perhaps it'd be the Everchaos Forest?
I mean, seriously, he was dripping charisma from every pore.

Am I reading too much into this?
