I heard leeches can be used to help cure some diseases, I don't remember very well. I think they do something to the blood, maybe it's some chemical or enzyme they have or stuff like that. (Also, having worms eating on an open wound is good too! They eat only the dead flesh, so all that's left is clean...I bet you think that's just disgusting. So do I.)

And even though what really freaks me out are spiders, I don't think getting a huge jar full of leeches poured on you while you're in bed would be pretty. AT ALL. Great comic as always!

Their saliva is an anti-clotting agent, and they're used in micro-surgeries where, after an organ is moved about, the organ or whatever's blood vessels aren't attached to a vein (basically, blood gets to the organ, then can't get back to the heart). This allows de-oxygenated blood to build up, swell the area, and starve the tissue. Leech saliva prevents the old blood from clotting, and they suck up said blood, allowing fresh, oxygenated blood to get to the tissue.

By worms I assume you mean maggots. But it's true none the less.

Yes, that. The Spanish word for "maggot" and "worm" is the same, that's why I got confused. Thanks for clarifying!

Well, while I have never physically felt a leach suck my blood. I have felt it emotionally...
You have been in a shallow lake, wading around with your shoes off. The water is murky, but it doesn't bother you... You walked there with flip flops so it wouldn't be difficult to take them off or put them back on when you left. What you didn't expect is the lump...
As you slip your foot into your open toed shoo and begin to walk, something feels... a bit off... It doesn't hurt though, so you keep going. Eventually, you begin to loose feeling in your foot. Or maybe not, still though, it does feel a bit strange... Could the lump have something to do with it? It doesn't really bother you, but you are almost home, and you think: "What the heck? I'll give it a look!" You sit down... your flip flop slides off just as easily as it always has, why shouldn't it? Nothing is different about it, except for the fact that it's a little sticky... Hmm, what is that stuff, sap? No, it's a little too red for sap, it couldn't be.... And for the first time, your heart freezes, as liquid nitrogen is poured down your spine...
Instinctively, you rub your hand along the bottom of your foot. The foot feels fine, but your hand notices something your foot doesn't. A lump? no... Feels more like a wad of bubble gum. And so you look...
You will never wade again...

The end!

P.S. HA!

Old cures are not best cures. Castor oil and iodine are probably somewhere in that cabinet as 'backup' for the other two children. No wonder Applejack will work to exhaustion so diligently.

SHOW NO WEAKNESS LITTLE PONY OR THE MEDICINES WILL BE APPLIED.

how the hell does leeches fix anything?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

HourglassOfSouls In reply to bluallday [2012-01-08 21:54:32 +0000 UTC]

Old tradition of using leeches for blood letting, a gruesome practice once thought to help cure fever. Medical science has come a looong way.

Leeches are still used in modern medicine, although largely in plastic surgery if blood vessels aren't connected right.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bluallday In reply to HourglassOfSouls [2012-01-08 22:15:13 +0000 UTC]

so we still use em today? how would they fix the disconnected blood vessels?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

HourglassOfSouls In reply to bluallday [2012-01-08 23:36:54 +0000 UTC]

I forgot the exact term, but what happens after certain facial surgeries, there's the possibility of blood collecting in the area, and if the blood pressure isn't relieved, it swells until it bursts. The blood vessels will connect on their own naturally, but it takes longer if the surgical scar explodes.

Suffice to say, they prevent a large, nasty mess.
