actually this was a comic for my tumblr thing but for some reason I colored (coloured?) itthe original tumblr question (well is not a question) was: everypony suspects pinkie pie is obsessed with party hats.

Colour is the UK/Canadian spelling. Color is the American spelling. Just think: Americans are too lazy to add the extra letter. No offense to Americans.

It's not laziness, not usually, it's more the general desire of most Americans to be different from everyone else in the world. The whole thing is really kinda stupid, and incredibly xenophobic.

Here's a brief history of the English language. Anglo-Saxons spoke a proto-germanic language until they were invaded by Normandy under William the Conqueror. Over several hundred years of French rule, French creeps its way into Old English to form Middle English. Eventually they French are kicked out, but the French loanwords remained. English evolved some more, America was colonized, and in the 1800s spelling began to be standardized.
French has a habit for spelling things the opposite of phonetically, using as many letters as possible for any given sound. Rousseau. Ratatouille. My last name, Charbonneau (pronounced 'sharbono'). Colour is French, Color is Latin. The u is pointless. The value for decorating words has rubbed off on Britain over time, hence the words ending in "re" pronounced like "er"
Anyway, spelling wasn't standardized until after the American Revolution. We ended up using simpler phonetic spelling, reflecting the character of early America as being straight-to-business, no-nonsense kind of folks. (what you call lazy, I call efficient)
The British, on the other hand, have this continuous cultural exchange with France and ended up keeping the French versions, also keeping with their national character of being sophisticated, internationally-minded, and a bit preoccupied with superficiality.
It's as simple as that.
TLDR version: The British are tight with France and use more French spelling, and French means nobody can spell your language.
If you're learning English as a Second Language (with no prior knowledge of French), I'd recommend you learn the American Spelling and make it easy on yourself. We're a nation built by immigrants, our spelling is slightly more ESL friendly and logical than that of our friends across the pond.
