Description First off, I hate changing a characters ethnicity/sexuality/gender in order to align to a PC agenda or spice a character up.  I hate what Marvel are doing with Iceman, I hate what DC are doing with Wally West and I think the Michael B Jordan Torch was a terrible idea because it changed the dynamic of the family (if you are going to change the ethnicity of the character, why pick one of the two who are supposed to be siblings - no sense at all).  That said I think it can work when the ethnicity of the character is of no particular relevance to their history (Ben Urich in Daredevil) or they are a new legacy character (Miles as Spider-Man, though Peter will always be the definitive Spider-Man to me personally).  There are two reasons that I made Tim black and they are both linked.  The first is purely visually, I hate how visually Jason and Tim (and to a lesser extent Damien) are just carbon copies of Dick in terms of appearance, I wish DC had kept Jason ginger and I loved that Grant Morrison brought that back in his run, only for the new 52 to shit all over it.  So from a drawing perspective I just wanted a bit of variety.  The second is that I think making Tim black helps differentiate his backstory from the previous two Robins. He is a different Robin and unlike Jason does not have to worry about resembling and emulating Dick.     I actually think Tim is one of the few characters to have been enhanced by the New 52, I like hat he is the only Robin who still has parents (though they are in witsec).  Though I am not a fan of the red Robin moniker (I always felt he should drop Robin entirely and take something new).

Tim Drake is the son of Jack and Janet Drake.  Tim always had a gifted intellect and exhibited particularly keen analytical and deductive abilities.  Tim is obsessed with Batman and has made it his mission to reveal the secret identity of the caped crusader.  He eventually does and tracks down the Batman and confronts him, having deduced that Batman is Bruce Wayne based on old footage of the Dick Grayson Robin.  Tim, who excelled in gymnastics (though not to the level of Dick) believed the then-Robin displayed movements akin to that of the Flying Graysons (Dicks family of gymnasts) and that Dick, the last of the Flying Graysons was the former ward of Bruce Wayne, a man with infinite resources.   Tim promises to never expose the Bat and begs to be the next Robin, Batman declines as he vowed to never take another Robin after Jason Todd, the previous Robin was killed 4 years ago.  However, over the next year Bruce would watch over Tim monitoring his progress.  It would be over that next year that Tims life would be turned upside down, his family would become the target of the hitman known as the Flamingo, a ruthless killer working for the Mexican Cartel.  It is revealed that Tims parents are actually in thr Witness Protection programme as his father was a witness to a high-ranking Cartel associate (an American policeman) committing a murder and that he testified.  They were relocated to Gotham when Tim was a toddler and Drake was their assumed name. Batman defeats the Flamingo whom is locked up in Arkham and the Drakes are forced into a new WitSec program.  Tim, however, requests to stay in Gotham and his parents agree, Batman promises to look after him and train him as the new Robin.  Drake remains Robin for three years until a certain Damien Wayne comes on the scene.

Tim is the most detective-like of the Robins, not as athletic as Dick, as aggressive as Jason or as ninja as Damien.  However, he is more likely to utilise gadgets and technology then the others, being the better detective he is also the most rational and cool headed of the four and more naturally cautious, less likely to underestimate his opponent.  Tim fights using a bo-staff and thus mainly adapts a Bojitsu fighting style, therefore, he is more about throws, pulls and holds as opposed to punches, kicks and knock-outs though he is proficient in the latter if needed. Nineteen years of age.

Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda.

Good point, Damian is a concoction of races though - its never entirely clear but Talia was supposedly half-Arabic/half-Chinese while Bruce is wholly Caucasian. Clearly identifying this level of ethnic complexity is quite tricky for an amateur like me but i could have made him browner.  Thing is even if Damian was browner that would still leave three almost identical Robins, I think varying them all would be good just from an aesthetic perspective.  Keep Dick as his was because he was the first and most prominent Robin, give Jason back his red-hair and changing up Tim completely.

You’re not kidding when you say all the Robins are practically identical. Sometimes artists even make a mistake with Damian and have him pure white.

To be fair I do think there is some ambiguity there. Both his mother and grandfather are a concoction of Asian, North African and European heritage but could broadly be described as Arabic. Under American and most western countries Arabs are classified as White legally. So when you consider that Damian is half-Arabic and half-White I think it is fair to interpret him as looking completely whiter. However, what is clear is that Damian should always have dark features (brown maybe green and black hair) so anyone drawing him with brown hair and blue eyes could be accused of ignoring his mixed heritage.

Yes this needed to be done ages ago, I can't tell you all the times of picking up some old/new comic/ or cartoon show/movie and thought which generic white boy is that. Please dc if you're listening it's kinda tedious.

Always thought it was weird how they just kept cloning Dick. I give Damian a pass as he is Bruce's son but still.

Nice work!

Love your opinion about the change in one character for a other ethnicity/sexuality/gender. My friend give me this drawing link and I found your work satisfying and your opinion worthy of interest. I wish he would have give you a nice comment too. Its a human thing to be happy after receiving positive feedback from our work and opinions.

Even if some artists (alias the one who wanted to leave his mark with Iceman) are doing it wrong

I think out of all characters in comics, the ones who need to be diversified the most are the Robins. It annoys me so much when you see Dick, Jason and Tim and they all look the same. Nice choice on choosing to race-swap Tim. I personally don't care about Wally's race, as long as his dynamic with Barry and Iris stays the same. I also think that if they wanted Michael B. Jordan as Johnny, they should have cast an African-American actress as Sue. As for Bobby being gay... no. That completely changes the character.

I agree with 90% of what you just said, just from an aesthetic standpoint it is annoying the Robins look so similar. You make a good point about Wally and you are spot on with the Storms, I'd have been OK with it had they not made one white and one black, making Sue white fundamentally changes their dynamic. FF was an example of the director choosing to cast his friend instead of the right person/people. Bobby I'd just infuriating I've got the point where I'm seething just thinking about it. I hate Bendis with a passion.

It's just a minor annoyance of mine when characters look really similar, just because I like to see a variety of appearances. Jason's red hair should be kept, as it differentiates him visually between Dick and Tim. I don't know if you've seen the Flash, but Wally is black and it makes sense, making him Iris' brother is what changes the character more. I'm fine with taking liberties for live action comic adaptations, as long as the character is still somewhat recognisable. I also don't have a problem if a writer states a character is gay, but that is only if his/her sexuality has not been touched upon yet.

Totally agree, I'm not a Flash reader (love the character in the animated series but never took to him on the page, could never get over how much I hated the costume) so I'm not best placed to comment there but could not agree more on Jason.  Red Hood/Jason Todd is a character I'm planning to do soon (in the next few weeks) and though I'm leaning towards doing the black hair with white streaks I may revert to red, for that reason.  Again, no problem with a character being gay, Northstar is one of my favorite X-men, but retroactively making a character gay to fill a quote is disgusting.

Opinion question for you: if they had truly been planning for Iceman to be gay all along, would you have been alright with it, as opposed to this out-of-left-field way they actually did it?

cspencey In reply to UncannyX-Factor [2016-04-03 20:25:21 +0000 UTC]

Yes, if they had planted the seeds or hinted at it. Some people would argue that they had but they most definitely hadn't, you can look at any character whom has been in comics as long as Bobby and you could cobble together a few panels that make them look gay. This was a clear attempt form a writer to leave his mark on a character he didn't create so that he could further his reputation as the diversifier at Marvel. If they'd wanted Bobby to be repressed there has been plenty of instances of thought bubbles and narration where they could have hinted at it. While he was boneing both Kitty and Mystique there were moments were he articulated his desire for them via narration or thought-panels. The only writer that hinted he could be gay was Chuck Austen and he fucked around with all the x-men turning it into a soap-opera. Bobby was made gay because he was considered vanilla by BMB and his previous attempts at creating his own gay x-men failed as the fans didn't take to them. BMB picked Bobby because he was a Stan Lee original so would garner media attention and because he had no long-standing romantic relationship with a female character. If you look at the x-men that proceeded Bendis you will see that Bobby was clearly being set-up for a relationship with Fireststar. Bendis should have never been allowed near the X-men, he's single handedly managed to destroy the franchise as a comic-book.

UncannyX-Factor In reply to cspencey [2016-04-04 01:29:43 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. Screw Bendis.

I suppose my rephrased question would be: if I wrote a fanfic that always planned for him to be gay, would that be cool or no? (Of all his flings, I liked Kitty and Firestar the best.)

cspencey In reply to UncannyX-Factor [2016-04-04 22:12:24 +0000 UTC]

It's a fanfic do anything goes. In my illustrated universe Bobby is straight as that was what he was when he was drawn. It also doesn't change the stories I've read before. I understand people are closeted, I get that, but comics are unique in that they offer insight into a characters thoughts and feelings while on the page. The worst thing about this change is it alters how you go back and read the old stories. When I read about Bobby and Polaris, Kitty or Mystique it pisses me off that those writers and me as a reader now read them totally differently.
