Description
After the declaration of independence of the Republic of the South Moluccas, a communist and a pro-Portugal army was formed in these islands. Pro-Portugal troops quickly occupied the main towns of the Malukus (Tenarte, Jailolo, Sidangoli, Loleo, Kairatu, Teluk Ambom, Namlea, Hatumeten), while the communists occupied Tobelo and rushed to self-defense and organization in the mountains. The successful acts of the pro-Portuguese troops and the disorganization of the Indonesian army led Portugal to support the rebels and declare war on Indonesia, later invading West Timor.

The UN criticism of the Netherlands changed its tone after the emergence of communist rebels and the Portuguese invasion. Without a formal authorization of UN, but with the agreement of the Indonesian government, the US invaded North Moluccas to fight mainly the communists.
