Ya know, I've said it a million times already but I'll say it again. The worst thing that ever happened to the ROM series was when Sal Buscema left the title. ROM 65 in particular could have been so much more of an epic issue if ANY other artist working for Marvel at the time had taken over the art instead of steve ditko. Anyways, here's a little something I whipped up this weekend during some down time. As many of you know Beta Ray Bill was one of the many Marvel superheros appeared in ROM 65. I like Ditko's work, but he was wrong for the ROM title.

over the past couple of years I've taken a liking to the character I especially like his origin story.

he does have an awesome origin story. i've always been a fan of his right from the start; as well as thunderstrike. both wonderful thor characters who, in my opinion, were better than the character who started them off: thor.

Love Beta Ray Bill...that whole storyline Simonson did was (or seemed to me at the time) so off the wall. "What's happened to Thor? What the***, an alien Thor!! My god, this is awesome!!"
I love Sal's art on Rom, he was and is such an under-rated artist.
He could crank out page after page and be consistently good. Just didn't have the big fanbase of some of the "hot" artists.
I seem to recall Akin & Garvey did some excellent inks over Sal's pencils for some issues too.

Nice stuff. ood old Bill, such an odd character but one who somehow works. I just wish writers would give him some respect once more. Last several times Ive seen him he's gotten rather dumped on.

the last time i read anything with Bill was The Annihilators mini-series. i had issues with the writing but not because of Bill they seemed to handle him as a character pretty well. there were a couple good moments with Bill in that series one was where he makes a reference to the Wraith War that he fought in and also another where he cracks up over Ronan kicking this guy's ass who they were fighting.

In the Secret Invasion he got totally owned by a super Skrull which Thor was able to defeat in short order. Writers seem to treat him like Vegeta to Goku but they forget that before he even became a Thor Bill was able to hold his own with the thunder god and even defeat him once.

yeah that does sound pretty lame because like you said Bill was a bad ass even before he became a demi god. i don't think i mentioned this before but i don't buy new comics any more when it comes to both marvel and DC. DC because i hate the reboot and marvel because i hate the way they've completely screwed up all ROM related story lines over the last 13 years not to mention their unwillingness to work out a rights deal from Hasbro. for example, the last time i bought a new comic from marvel was Infinity #1 back in Aug. 2013, prior to that i hadn't bought anything new for about 2 years. in Infinity#1 Galador and all it's spaceknights including Ikon were blown up which didn't make me happy for obvious reasons. however IKON has appeared again in the marvel universe at least twice with no explanation so apparently marvel also doesn't seem to regard continuity as being important. so yeah, their not going to get my money with writing like that.

Yeah for similar reasons I havent purchased any Marvel or DC titles in years. I do go through the trades at the bookstores to get an overview of whats happening but Im not a committed reader anymore. I prefer to stick to the indie books like Boom Studios, Dynamite, IDW and Dark Horse these days.

It´s good to see them both again. I was re-reading Walt Simonson run on Thor on a tradepaperback, and the whole spaceship sequence was awesome.

one of the things i like about the Beta Ray Bill character is his origin story. he looks like this monstrous creature but in reality he is honorable and noble as he proved when he spared THOR's life in his battle for the power of Mjolnir. i've known about Bill since the 80s but only started to really get familiar with the character in the last few years. as for the drawing it's self, yeah i'm big on getting proportions right bad figure composition is usually the down fall of most fan art in my opinion.
