Description
A while ago I went to the movies with a friend and we saw “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken” the latest film from Dreamworks Animation.
While not on the same level as the likes of “The Bad Guys” or “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” I nevertheless enjoyed it.
Although it has a really cool premise the story is rather basic with a few things I felt could have been altered or fleshed out more. But at the same time the major characters were well defined in personality (Ruby especially being an adorable little guppy 🥰). The animation was another high point, I especially liked how the Gillmans’ movement evoked old rubber hose cartoons and the setting of Oceanside was bursting with color and crazy architecture (also kind of reminded me of Venice, Italy). And of course there was the epic Kaiju battle between Ruby and the evil mermaid Chelsea which was absolutely the highlight of the movie.
Overall it was a fun, entertaining family film. One that did NOT deserve to bomb as hard as it did at the box office (I personally blame the abysmal marketing that only picked up a month before it came to theaters and the fact that it was released alongside other more anticipated movies). I honestly would like to see Ruby’s story continued, be it in a sequel or TV series, but only time will tell. Anyway back to the drawing…

Last night an idea surfaced in my head (pun entirely intended) that I just had to put to paper. That being Ruby Gillman encountering the Res Bluster (aka Red) from Netflix’s own animated film about sea monsters “The Sea Beast”. Given Ruby’s compassionate nature and Red’s tendency to befriend those that show her proper respect I think they’d make great friends!
