Description
From the pages of Kurt Busiek's Astro City...specifically,volume 12,Lover's Quarrel. It begins when Stekk,a member of a race of intelligent talking gorillas hidden within the Antarctic Circle, learns of the existence of rock music. Teaching himself to play the drums,he rejects the militaristic life of his fellow simians and escapes to Astro City;Renaming himself Sticks,he seeks out a drummer's position with a local band, but before his first audition,he rescues people from a burning building, leading many to think he's a new superhero. He also attracts the attention of several terrorist organizations, who attempt to capture him with the intentions of selling him to the highest bidder...thus potentially endangering any musical group he might play with.
Wanting neither the life of superhero or slave,Sticks begins to think he has no future as a musician, until he hits upon an idea...donning bulletproof formal wear,he begins to fight crime, calling himself Tuxedo Gorilla. Upon making a name for himself,he announces an audition for any other superhumans with musical inclinations. He attracts a human torch guitarist,a cyborg/living keyboard,a woman whose sonic vocal powers can create unique melodies and an elastic-bodied guitarist whose body is ablaze in psychedelic color....
and Powerchord is born!

Yes,the whole series is interesting. It borrows conventions from the superhero comic, both past and present, yet is free of many of its restrictions.

No matter what song they perform, they're animated in a ten-frame loop clock-adjusted to the tempo of whatever tune.

Back in the 1970s in America, Saturday morning cartoons were stuffed with titles where all the main characters were in a band. And so bands have to perform. To save money, the studios just did a stock loop of band-playing-their-instruments animation, and then would adjust the FPS rate to fit the tempo of the song featured in that episode. Filmation did this lots. They also added little custom clips for each performer to pepper throughout each song.

I can see this band presented in a TV show in such a way. And it is a good thing.
