Description 3/22/2010 EDIT: I found the high-res scanned version so I could replace the old photo I took of it years ago. This will be available as a print on my website soon.

-----------

This took 5 weeks on a 24x18 piece of paper with Sharpie fine point 24 colors (although I only used about 18).

I'm glad you still enjoy it. I often wonder if artists from hundreds of years ago gave much thought to whether their works might remain on display, in museums and such, over the course of centuries.

I am utterly blown away! I've done lots of stippling before, but I've never tried to introduce color. This is spectacular! (Though I can't imagine trying to do 12!!! Especially at such a large size!) The way you've colored this is just incredible. Every part of the picture is vibrant and exciting!

That's amazing!
And with sharpies even. I love how so many different colors, like you said, were able to become with stippling.

absolutely amazing!!!
do you draw it in pencil lightly first or do you just freehand it?

ctrl-alt-delete In reply to madeleine-01 [2007-07-21 03:04:25 +0000 UTC]

I did draw it in pencil first... sort of a paint-by-numbers technique so I wouldn't skew the image. The pencil drawing wasn't real detailed or anything, just a simple outline of the turtle's face, scales, and shell.

jSepia [2005-09-18 06:21:18 +0000 UTC]

My refinery pales in comparison to that.

As if creating a detailed turtle with such a lively color mix wasn't enough, you did it all dot by dot... I'm... speechless. This is infinitely, ridiculously awesome. And I can't believe you did 11 other pieces the same way. No, seriously, I can't believe it. Did I understand something wrong from the description?

I can't imagine the patience and talent it takes to master the colors like that. There are areas where you blend three or four colors to get those intrincated underwater hues. I have to make an effort to nitpick this, but I'd say I don't like the perspective/angle of the right fin, because I can't compare it to the left one. I also think the carapace should have a more tridimensional look, with the white lines turning into curves near the end. The gradient in the background could be a bit more uneven, but I like the design of the waves a lot. It's a really good idea to make them like that instead of attempting complex reflections.

This is the kind of art that brings tears to my eyes and makes me feel desperately attracted to the button.

Just a question... Did you break any pencils while drawing the dots?

ctrl-alt-delete In reply to jSepia [2005-09-18 17:07:17 +0000 UTC]

You're right about the 11 other pieces... I hadn't done them, but they are due at the end of the school year. One down, eleven to go. Some will be in color, but I also plan to throw a few black and white ones in there so that I can focus on shades rather than hues. Those hopefully won't be as time consuming. As for breaking any pencils, I used ultra fine tip Sharpie markers instead. With pencils I'd probably be too tempted to draw by sketching instead of using dots. The markers leave nice small, bold spots of colored ink that would definently show up better than pencil dots, anyway. Thanks for the critique and +fav. I'll keep your suggestions in mind when working on my future pieces.
