Description
A bit of makeup and photography I did for the movie "A Bump in the Night". Took me about an hour and a half (this includes tattoo cover) and I had to mix my own blood. The combo above is: Theatrical Blood, Candy Blood, my own Maple Syrup blood mix, ketchup and red makeup. There is a small slit throat application on his neck, but it isn't noticeable.
PS: This is the first time I have ever done a "dead" body before. Please comment on realism and what I should work on in the future. I am aware that some of the blood is a bit pink and light red (nothing I could have done at the time, I didn't have much to work with).

No need to change here, you did a wonderful job on your first time... I see you mix blood before
I love the essence of this photo. The blood. The emotion. The model. Just amazing.

HOLY SNIKEY this is awesome. I need to talk with you. The neck cut is perfect, no I mean perfect. Brilliant work and well capture. Sweet mama and the light is just right to pull the realism (this is make up right?). Hot damn I want to be you when I grow up.

LMAO! It's fake I promise, it also helps that I am good at photography. Note me or write here for any more questions. I answered some of the neck cut questions in other comments on this deviation, too.

You did wonderful! This is really good and highly realistic. I'd freak if I found THAT on my doorstep. lol
I have a question though. For the slit throat, did you use wax to make the gash or just some latex and pinch the neck together. I couldn't really tell. I'd really like to know. I'm teaching myself stage makeup techniques. Do you mind if I use this as a reference?

No not at all, go right ahead. This being my first sfx makeup, I didn't know what the heck I was doing. It took me several hours to do. I used a cheap latex application from Halloween which didn't want to stay on very well. After a few minutes of holding it on, Josh screwing it up by talking and swallowing, blow drying it and whatnot.. it FINALLY stayed on (first photo). Then came the task of blending, which I used my basic foundation, cover-up stick, and pressed powder on (NYC brand is the cheapest and can be found at Walmart for like .75-$1.75 an item.
I have progressive shots here:

Overall I didn't have much to work with and we we're so low budget I used crap left over from Halloween and made my own: red/"injury stack" makeup from cinema secrets, nasty thick coagulated blood from cinema secrets, syrup, ketchup, water, a butter knife, and sponge.

Thank you very much! That helped a lot. I'll try it as soon as I get more blood in my kit.
Again. It looks really great! Keep it up!

Remember you can ALWAYS make your own blood, which sometimes works better than real blood... some of that is maple syrup, try using corn instead though cause it's thicker and tends to "stream" less.

Very nice job! It looks real........
I've tried dead/killed shots before but I could never get them to look "authentic" any tips?
The thing I hate the worst is cleaning up. It's a big sticky mess :/

Tips um? BLEND! That is all I can say, blend any applications. Use a red cream as a base and put your blood on top of that. Also look at allot of real death and decay photos (it's icky but worth it in the end), copy them. Watch a crap load of b-movies, copy them.

I've never actually seen a murdered body so I can't comment on ACTUAL realism, but in the artistic and convincing-movie-effects sense, it looks fucking fabulous. It looks like the body was dragged to it's resting place with the smudges of blood on the ground under the hand and the slightly puckering throat slash. It's so yummy...makes me wanna watch horror movies right now!

YAY TANYA APPROVAL!!!
Thing I have noticed is, real dead bodies don't look real, they are so unusual they don't look right to me. The human body is so soft it's insane, it's so fragile that when something happens it just turns into meat mush (graphic, but the truth). Bodies look far more realistic in movies than in real life. Go to [link] if you interested in seeing what I am talking about. Warning, VERY graphic.

It is very realistic, the only thing I would suggest is a larger pool of blood under the head. ANd maybe some squirting splatter marks all over the shirt, skin, and ground.

ctrlaltvamp In reply to jonniedee [2007-04-21 21:12:54 +0000 UTC]
The shirt was to be spared because we still needed it in the movie. I agree on the pool of blood though. There we're some splatters, but not much.

The slit is an application under the makeup. I used Reel FX cuts from Halloween.

I like the Photo's... but there is a slit through the throat and and there's not enough blood for this injury...

ctrlaltvamp In reply to ElaineM [2007-04-15 17:39:38 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, I thought so to. I was having blood problems, I didn't have any corn syrup so the maple was goopy and spilling everywhere (just didn't have the consistency that I wanted). It wasn't staying on long enough for me to add more. This is actually a remake of a student film (at least I took the time to do this). In the first film it was a bloody line across the neck and nothing else lol.
