I give the episode triple a! That was the best episode of telling about the apple siblings parents. What I thought granny smith and grand pear spending all those years bickering on who was the best farmer was super immature of them. It was interesting that applejack and applebloom and big mac are half pear despite being apples and the three of them inherited their parent skills such as hard work, honesty and helping other ponies find their abilities.
Very sad at the end when grand pear hated when his daughter chose to be an apple over being a pear and then abandoned her.
I liked those two. It is a big mystery on where they are and what ever happened to them.

I can't help but marvel at the irony that a show about cartoon ponies ended up being William Shatner's most serious role in years.

The Apple parents are dead, it was confirmed by the show staff a long time ago.

I loved it. oh so emotional and Shatner's voice as Grand Pear was perfect! I hope to some day find out where AJ's parents are because I don't think they are dead...but maybe they are. It's a good point to start another episode with at a later date. I find the emotion in this as good as at the end of Sisterhooves Social when Big Mac and Apple bloom have their heart to heart!
This kind of writing and story telling is the MLP I truly love! Glad to see it come back.

Sad that those who still have yet to see the episodes early (as it hasn't aired in most countries yet)
has to struggle to avoid all these spoilers coming out of the fandom

I admit to not keeping up as much with the show, but I made myself catch up just to watch this episode.
I do like that it works as a stand-alone, and that you don't have to watch the rest of the season to understand anything, I just wish I'd known it sooner! Regardless, I enjoyed the episode a lot, and I'm hoping maybe for more closure about what happened to the Apple parents in the future.

Beautifully written episode from beginning to end. The story had so many emotions that pulled that right amount of heartstrings and kudos to the writers for basing it/inspiring it from the story of romeo & juliet.
Also, the moral of the episode brings up a good point that doesn't get talked about more often. We really don't know when certain truths or stories can be told to anyone at anytime (it is hard to know when it is exactly the right time to do so), but it must be told.

While it is most likely AJ's parents are dead, I would really like to know the details of how they died until I fully believe that they are gone. It's a shame that Hasbro (and parents who would complain) don't have the stones to simply talk about death.
Technically it was Grand Pear that kicked his daughter out of the family, not the entire family. I would like to believe that his actions caused a rift within the Pear family; some being mad at him for what he did and other siding with his actions with his daughter.
I also wanted to smack him and Granny Smith about this stupid feud so badly.

It's not about having the nerve to write about death, but death, to me, has been shown and written so bluntly without any true meaning or poetic thought that it comes off as rush or hastily put together. Plus, this romeo x juliet storyline already gives us an idea as to what happened.
The story of this episode is written so beautifully that showing the results would take away the meaning this episode already portrayed....at least to me anyways. However, I do understand the feeling to see or know the full extent of what happened.

Is it the most emotional episode you've encountered?

It was quite drastic and build to make you cry, in terms of that it is the most emotional episode so far. However, The season starters of season 1 and 2 made me feel bad as well. Hypnosis and mind control as well as making Twilight cry, that was sad too.

I'm mad that Pear Butter didn't have freckles, it would have accentuated her design pretty nicely and shown where the kids got it from.

I always knew the real mother must have been a cheating whore.
It'd explain why all the kids look so different from one another. I'm disappointed, I thought this was a children's show that taught good morals to our children.

It's an excellent episode, no doubt. Though your concerns about the shows inability to deal with such subject matter intrigue me. Do you think MLP should deal with things like divorce, loss and neglect?

...a good place to start is Homosexuality.
I know Hasbro is hesitant to take those gambles, but I do hope they explore those themes. Even if they flounder on them, everyone is sure to appreciate the attempt.

It's a children's show in the modern era, so we can automatically rule out them being dead.
Imprisoned somewhere, perhaps?

Best episode of the season, above even the previous episode by my standards. If not for Pinkie Pride, Stranger Than Fan Fiction, and Twilight's Kingdom blocking its path, The Perfect Pear would've easily been my overall favorite of the series. This puts Crusaders of the Lost Mark to shame, and makes other episodes like Amending Fences look like pure happiness. Yup, it's the show new saddest episode ever. And as much as I hate to admit it based on his harshness towards his fans and other people he works with, Shatner was INCREDIBLE as Grand Pear. I especially loved Felicia Day's heartfelt performance as Grand Pear's daughter; Pear Butter.
And I got a better question for you, Cuddle; Did you cry at least ONCE here??

I think a lot of episodes nowadays can be skipped, but this one is definitely one of the best recent episodes. I'd recommend it to lapsed fans and frequent watchers alike! The question is: what happened to their parents?!
