Description

This picture...makes me want to sucker-punch myself in the uterus. I liked it until I got to the mountains...but oh well. The characters were begging to be drawn and it couldn’t be stopped.

“Kevin Goes to Business School” was going to be my doujinshi project about a young Hammer Brother who, through his complete incompetence with the art of slinging hardware, flunks out of school and ends up becoming a Business Brother, which is seen as a particularly embarrassing act, especially to his father. A dramedy, it was a story of growing up, a boy learning to reconnect with (and believe in! ) himself and his family. Apparently I got inspired back in June, while exploring the wonderful world of MarioWiki. I even have a script and a crapload of notes; all this time from then until now was spent developing the characters and trying to freaking draw them!

Now that I’m back in school and have much apathy, I don’t think KGtBS is going to start any time soon, so now I have a buncha characters just floating around. It makes me sehr traurig, but maybe someday I’ll actually draw it out... But as for now, I’ll introduce them to you. GO INFO-DUMPING TEAM, GO!

MURIEL: I’m going to admit straight-up that Muriel isn’t a very well-developed character for me, so please excuse my shoddy excuse for an introduction. The“Lady of a Thousand Changes”. Muriel changed the most drastically out of all the other characters, in both appearance and personality. She was originally very dynamic and very spirited, with yellow skin, straight blond hair, and a blue shell. She was also named for the color of her eyes, which were to be sea green. However, I kept getting her and Marissa’s looks completely mixed up when I would imagine her, so her design and personality went straight to that little blond Koopa you see to your right.

Muriel is a very quiet, soft-spoken Boomerang Mother, a “delicate beauty” kind of figure (*COUGH*), who wants nothing more than a stable and happy household. That being said, she often finds herself in the middle of disputes between her husband and son, Terrence and Kevin respectively, who share two very different perspectives on life. After all the trouble she went through just to have a child, Muriel doesn’t care about the petty nuances. As one who is completely enamored with her baby, she wants nothing more than for him to be happy and successful, and woe to anyone who gets in the way of this happening, for she can become quite wrathful. She has the very last say on anything that goes on in her household, and for that, she and her opinions are held in very high respect.

Again, I apologize for this crappy intro. x___X Random facts? She uses a large, completely to-scale boomerang as her weapon. She is known for her patience and long temper, but when she is angry, you will know. Her biggest fear is something happening to Kevin. She enjoys sewing (particularly garments for her son), and teasing/baiting Terrence. She comes from a large family of interspecies-dating Boomerang Brothers (e.g., her dad is a Fire Brother, etc.).

TERRENCE: Terrence is the husband of Muriel and the father of his beloved son, Kevin. He is best characterized by his wide, toothy smile and his drooping, half-shut eyes that make him appear as if he is permanently high and/or drunk . Coming from a prestigious family of purebred Hammer Brothers, Terrence is extremely elitist and arrogant, harbouring the opinion that his race is God’s hardware-slinging gifts to the world. What caused him to deviate just once to marry a mongrel Boomerang Sister is beyond any of his other family members.

Although he strives to be the very best father he can be to Kevin, his supremist mindset often undermines his actions, oftentimes leaving Kevin to feel absolutely hopeless and embarrassed by his antics. While he means the best for his dutiful son, he dominates Kevin’s life entirely, filtering all aspects of it such as friends, schools, and career, with absolutely no consideration for others. In his world, Terrence is Always Right, and he has yet to learn that childrearing is an arduous learning experience for both the child and the parent. The only person who regularly undermines his decisions is his wife.

His favorite things in the world are his son, his wife, and having sex (and not particularly in that order! ). He enjoys cooking as a hobby, and is a man of seafood, being particularly fond of Bloopers and Cheep-cheeps, and mushrooms (and in no way does he discriminate if you’re sentient or not). He’s extremely hydrophobic, afraid of insects, and hates (with a red-hot intensity of a thousand suns!) Goombas! His birth name is Terentius, and only members of his biological family call him by this name.

KEVIN: Kevin is a very ruddy-skinned Hammer Brother, the eponymous protagonist of the story. He is best characterized by his large eyes, helmet that is too big for his head, and the straps that are always undone. He is also the only member of his family that consistently wears clothes (if not in business attire, then his green shoes).

When it comes to being what he is, though, Kevin is a complete failure. With his unusually skinny body and complete lack of upper-body strength and coordination, he fails at completing the most menial of hammer-throwing tasks. As if this wasn’t bad enough, Kevin shows absolutely no sign of Hammer Brother mentality, which is seen as quite odd to his very belligerent and aggressive counterparts. Very quiet and shy, introverted Kevin is very sensitive to others around him, which doesn’t at all fare well with the fact that he’s being trained to ultimately kill.

Due to these anomalies, most of his relationships with other members of his race are strained, including those with his classmates, who tease him, and his father, who doesn’t understand him. When he’s finally kicked from graduating Hammering School, he wants nothing more than to find some sort of balance between being what he is and what he isn’t, and to also be accepted for who he is.

Kevin isn’t completely incompetent, however. Academically, he scores the highest grades on all written assignments and tests, much to the jealousy of his classmates and pride of his teacher. Unfortunately, booksmarts aren’t all that are needed to pass...

In his free time, Kevin enjoys reading, going on outings with his family (especially to the park), and attending Sunday grocery shopping with Terrence. Much to the dismay of his father, he is mildly curious about the world around him, and, seeing no absolutely nothing wrong with it, enjoys making friends with others outside his species. His biggest fears are rejection and confrontation, and losing Marissa, for whom he harbours strange feelings that he doesn’t understand.

MARISSA: In a world where the wonderful art of hammer throwing is dominated by males, Marissa aspires to make her mark as a rare Hammer Sister. But hey, just because she’s female doesn’t mean she’s fragile! Marissa demands the utmost respect from her all-male classmates, even going as far to utterly smash anyone who gets in her way. She takes her schooling very seriously, her rank at the top of the class an example of this.

Despite her fiery determination, Marissa is a very spirited and carefree young Koopa. Her dynamic, somewhat aloof attitude is a polar opposite of Kevin’s, which caused them to become perfect hammering partners. Whereas Kevin is all brain, Marissa is all brawn, and from this, they learn from each other greatly, existing together in a delicate balance.

Since Marissa isn’t a well-developed character for me yet, not much is known about her except that she likes ice cream and playing with Kevin, and that she blows nutsack at math (particularly geometry and simple equations!). She is in no way related to Kevin and is simply his best friend. She also went through more name changes than anyone else in the story.

THE TEACHER: The teacher is a sad individual whose face is cast in a permanent frown. He’s so sad that I haven’t even named him yet.

The schoolteacher is a very quiet, reserved Koopa who, after spending decades serving the Great Demon King, found himself training future Hammer Students. Due to his militaristic upbringing, he rules over his group of schoolchildren quite violently; demanding nothing but pure devotion and rigid excellence, he doesn’t hesitate to break various objects over his students’ heads such as hammers and his beloved wooden yardstick (which, oddly enough, is perfectly intact again in every scene change. ). Despite his cold nature, he only wants the best for every one of his students.

Again, despite my love of the tragic teacher, he’s still in the developing stage.Uh, fun facts? He’s purely vegan and thinks eating meat is disgusting. His favorite foods are may- and red apples. His lover was also his Hammer Partner, who, unfortunately, was killed while they were both serving in one of Bowser’s freaking weird-arse commando attacks on the Mushroom Kingdom.
