I have a friend who is Transformers crazy, and seen the 1980s animated movie in the cinema, etc.
He watched the Bay movies and was (like yourself) badly mauled in the soul by such rubbish.
I really wish the proper Japanese design company had been involved more heavily in the films...

Oh, absolutely. Toei Animation's tremendous and spectacular effort in the '86 movie is one of the many reasons why it's a hell of a lot better than all of the Bayformers combined. I myself have seen three entire Transformers series so far; G1, Animated and Prime, all fantastic in their own right, but Animated and Prime are tied for me at what I consider the greatest Transformers series yet.
But boy, what I'd give to be your friend, having the golden privilege of seeing it in theaters at the time of its release!
