I am not open for ArtTrades at the moment!
Thank you~

HOLY BUBBLE THIS IS FINALLY DONE
If we're not taking in how long this actually took to whip together, this was actually rather fun in the end
Those who are curious it probably took me +20 hours in total to finish this piece up I didn't exactly time it but that's how I would give it a blind guess...

I got to explore environment that I am not the most familiar with and do some more perspective stuff... I'd like to say I probably learned something out from this experience
This piece was totally something I would call stepping out from my comfort zone!
It might not seem like it but water is still a very mysterious thing for me to draw I haven't yet found my way to draw water that would be fit to my own style but while working on this piece, I think I have found some traits I could develop a little bit further

So I got to draw Emma's three feline-fish babies: Novu (The one in the front), Ani (dark blue one) and Roku (the white-and-orange one).
It was fun to work around them as they're most definitely something I don't get to draw every day

I went out of my way to add all those bubbles there individually and it surely paid off
At least I'd like to think so!

I hope that you like it~

In English, because I can.

As a general picture, I do quite like the use of colors you have going on here while keeping in mind the characters' palettes. The corals don't blend into them nor do they draw too much attention away from them.
As for the composition, it feels a little clumsy, personally, I would have made the canvas taller so that Novu's curve of the body would have brought the viewer's eyes to Ani and Roku.

Though while I understand how much complex executing the background would have gotten, I still think you kind of missed using the full potential of coral reef-background by doing very familiar points of interest- meaning the "mountain" -ish bases with the stick like corals. There's a lot more to a coral reef, a simple google search would have given you the idea.

I personally really like how you did the light reflection on the surface, though. It looks rather real and is very interesting to look at in general. What I don't really like is the "shading" of the water, as you named it. You don't really shade the water, the bit of a darker blue in your reference image was merely the distance. That brings me to the bottom of the wet space. I think the further the coral "stalagmites" go the more desaturated/blue they should turn. In this, they just... get lighter. There's more water in between the camera and the object, thus it would look bluer, also checking from Google would have made this very clear [link]
Also for the bubbles, I think you made them too smooth to be air struggling against the pressure of water... Another google search would have helped you on that too [link]

I understand you have said you're not too familiar with underwater sceneries, but punctuality is important none the less. That was it for the background unless I'm forgetting something.
Now for the characters.

I have never been uncomfortable looking at my own characters, Mint. Somehow you have beat me to that with these guys' eyes. The pupils, specifically. You have a tendency while drawing others' characters you take the artist's style for the eyes and apply it to yours, rather than translate it to yours. As for my style... it looks really, really unsettling. Novu looks like she is a dead demon looking for her next meal. If you genuinely wanted to try having smaller pupil than usual in your style, the iris is way too large for that. As for Ani and Roku, I can hardly see Ani's iris through the luminosity layers, which frankly makes her the most unsettling thing to look at from the three characters.

The anatomy feels broken too, mostly Novu's elbow being so low down and her arm looking super short, the rest of her body feels... off, her knees feel wonky like as if they are spread out rather than bent downward for a swimming glide. I'm pretty sure you didn't mean to draw her swim like a frog. Then there are Ani and Roku's back legs... I don't think I have ever seen a cat's leg bend like that.

From anatomy to the poses, I do like Novu's pose with all honesty, it establishes her personality very well. I also approve of Roku's pose from the waist up. As for the rest of the posing, it's quite tame. Ani looks super stoic just floating there for no reason, and Roku's below repeats the same sort of stiffness. Ani's whiskers also could have been made more flowing rather than look the same on both sides, which makes it look like they are unaffected by the water's current, pressure and lift.

Even with all that said, I do like how you expressed their personalities by their facial expressions. Especially Roku's little wink and Ani's pouty mouth c':

Thanks for bothering to Trade with me once again, I'll try not to die finishing my half ´v`/

Okay lets tackle this devil now *stretch*
Get it? Since 666 words...:'3

Originally this was supposed to be taller yet I bet SAI would have hated me for it if this was any taller yet I still agree some more tallness would've be better for this.

Honestly I would have wanted to use more different types of corals to cover all around the piece but this is what I ended up not because it would've been easier to do but mainly because of the size of the file and with keeping track all the coral layers.

The water surface/light area is the thing I am the most happy with with the entire water. Later on the "shading" yet being more depth I kind of wanted to bring out some underwater current to the water which doesn't really show off.
The main reason I went with the "shading" was that I would have found it more boring yet it would've been more correct to make it a hint deeper shade of blue + blur.
Again one of these detail habits that I should learn to let go at times.

This part we've been over with over Discord/Skype so I shall leave it finished.

For Novu's the right elbow/paw/front leg is supposed to be a little bit further stretched which makes it seem a bit wonky as I should've probably lowered the chest a little bit. As for her back legs I shall try and explain my choice there as I have it inside my head well drawn rather than in words :'3
The reason her back legs are going/bending that way is that she's slowing down her swimming pace while trying to kick herself deeper. Ya know when going down first like "/ -way" and then doing some kind of sharper "loop" to break the flow to the X direction?
That's the best sense you can get out of me xD
As for Ani's whiskers; I actually was thinking about it but because of the older reference which I understand is few years older shows them as a whiskers but judging by the thickness (again could be the fact it is a bit old) I was thinking for a moment would Ani be able to control them. Therefore due to her expression her whiskers would stiffen along with it.

Original idea with the poses was mainly that the three would've been talking/having casual conversation until Novu takes off due seeing something nice. While she's away Roku makes a face just to get reaction out from Ani, which is why they are so boring at the back while the front pose has more action going on.
But I agree Novu's pose is my personal favorite as well out of the three~

You're welcome!
It sure has been a while since we last made a trade According to the previous ArtTrade submission it has been four years which I'd like to think is quite a while!
And as far as I can see you're still well and alive after finishing your half from our trade :'3

Haha se on tosiaanki raaka arvioni tän kuvan kanssa Kun olin taidekoulussa, me tehtiin siellä todella paljon krokipiirtämistä (kirjoitinkohan tuon oikein...xD) jonka ansiosta oma piirtäminenkin vauhdittui
Suosittelen kokeilemaan! Se kehittää kans havainnointi kykyä kun jokin X asia pitää saada sutattua paperille 1-20 minuutissa~

Kiitos!
Huomasin itsekkin tota risteävyyttä ja päädyin loppuen lopulta miettimään, että onko vedenpohjassa veden pinnan ansiosta edes mahdollista, että valo heijastuisi vain yhdestä kohtaa varsinkin, jos pinta liikkuu?:"3 Jälleen kerran näitä päivittäisiä pähkinöitä aivoille ajateltavaksi

Nanagon In reply to CuteFlare [2017-08-12 07:20:28 +0000 UTC]
