You know that Otakus and Weeaboos are NOT the same, right?
Other than that, I'd imagine that it could be one awkward encounter.

They probably aren't, but I really haven't delved TOO far into the semantics to know for sure.
But yes, it'd be awkward

They aren't. An Otaku is a person that likes and has an interest in Japan.
A Weeaboo is a person who shuns every culture except Japan's and they also think that Japanese culture is best in the all world. The way that the Internet uses it is to describe people that show ANY sort of interest in Japan, or can be akin to using the word autism as an insult.

Huh. I had assumed that an Otaku was someone with a particular liking for anime, while a Weeaboo takes the whole fandom... just a little bit TOO far. I didn't know it referred to Japanese culture as a whole

That's why you should have done more research. Heck, people that ARE Japanese or even half Japanese are sometime called Weeaboos.
Also, the origin of the word "Weeaboo" is not even Japanese.

Yeah, I figured that much. It didn't sound Japanese, so I just assumed it was some sort of derogatory term.

Well, the word was originated from a comic, where a person is in a meeting, he said the the word Weeaboo and then got spanked by his coworkers as a punishment.
