Description I'm immunocompromised, so I'm stuck in my apartment for a while, which gave me time to finally start watching Invader Zim!
Nobody told me how brutal Dib was. Like, I was expecting someone a lot like Dipper, but this 12 year old kid just looks at this weird middle aged alien and goes "Okay. Time to cut him open." I'm not saying Zim is a better person, he's not, but Dib, you okay?

Yeah like Zim obviously wants to take over humanity so he's messed up too but Dib genuinely wants to kill Zim and but his body on display for the public to see.

When Gravity Falls first came out my nickname for Dipper was “Well-Adjusted Dib.”

Dipper has a few issues but compared to Dib, that boy is the ideal image of stress-free mental health.
Also I've been watching this whole show keeping your "Bill and andy are Zim and Skoodge" comment in mind and it's made me lose it a few times, especially when I found out about the script for the Trial. "Two defective weirdos at the bottom rank of a terrible unfair class system team up to see something beyond the boring world they know" is literally just them. Zim telling baby Skoodge that he seems impressionable and then dragging him on a dangerous mission to see the surface is just Bill and Andy. Two tiny screaming jerks and two nice, impressionable friends for the price of one.

I’m SO glad that connection made sense to you too. I just realized it also checks out because while ZIM is defective SKOODGE technically isn’t, he’s unlikely to be on trial for his existence, he just...doesn’t conform to the society’s standards of how the ideal of his type should look, so he really might as well be defective.

Circles: Man, you’re ugly!
Andy: And short : )

The Circles let Andy take Bill's case because they want an excuse to get rid of him but then it's a Skoodge on Blorch situation where he actually does really, really well, and they're just like, "Okay, actually, let's just kill him."

I was obsessed with IZ in my early teens and rewatching the whole thing last summer in advance of the movie was so, so interesting because it was like “Dear lord, I forgot that all these deadly alien politics were actually in the show and not just invented for people’s fanfictions.” It occurred to me for the first time that the Tallest publicly advertise ZIM’s 24/7 failure, and even pretty much livestream it for the entertainment of their elites, because ZIM just happens to be a real live Irken who slots perfectly into the logic whereby height is proportionate to competence. Whereas when a different fun-sized invader turns out to be the dark horse MVP of Impending Doom II...they just get rid of him quietly and attribute his victory to a taller guy. They may be dumb but they know how to keep a handle on their claim to authority.

Yeah, I'll be honest, I saw a lot of like fanart and stuff before I got into the show, and I kind of figured all those comics that were like "ZIM is a former child soldier desperate to prove himself because his society sees him as defective and constantly tries to underhandedly make him fail and mocks him when he does" and "SKOODGE is someone on the cusp of being defective who is constantly made fun of and probably had never been complemented in his life" and "Irkens are not allowed to love they are just elite soldiers" were looking too far deep into things, which, like, I do that too, so no judgement, but no, that's jsut how Irken society actually is. Red and Purple are funny idiots but they're also absolutely brutal leaders who know a lot about propaganda.

I just love that it’s not even the most important part of the show, the show in its substance is about a wacky schoolyard rivalry with theoretically deadly stakes. It’s not really like a modern cartoon like say, Steven Universe, where the worldbuilding IS the show. But there’s this constant background noise of Irken drama that doesn’t even have to be there and that ZIM isn’t always even involved in and I love it. I would’ve loved the show to hang on long enough for it to explode into a big story but it’s equally effective as just a recurring reminder of the fact that ZIM is extremely checked out.

Yeah agreed! On one hand, I would have loved the show to have been able to go into a lot of worldbuilding and an ongoing plot, I kind of feel like there were some eventual ideas for that, but on the other, it's really funny to have this awful facist empire with a brutal power structure colonizing planets across the universe in the background of a bunch of episodes where an old bug man gets in slapfights with a 12 year old.

Dib is so important because he’s the only character who thinks that ZIM is even close to what ZIM cracks himself up to be. I need a nemesis with that much confidence in my ability to accomplish my goals.

And ZIM is the only once who really buys that Dib is actually a competent, sane paranormal investigator. I do really love the idea of them eventually being pals after ZIM finally realizes his mission is bunk, they really would be good friends if they didn't want to absolutely destroy each other.
I also love SKOODGE living in ZIM's basement and him, ZIM and GIR just kind of forming this weird defective club. Dib is allowed to join them sometimes if he doesn't try to dissect the Irkens in the group.

My absolute favorite version of ZIM and Dib Friendship is like. They are literally each other’s best friend already, they just have. No insight into the fact. And Gaz fully recognizes it, she’s like “you know at a fundamental level this is exactly like when my Twitch stream buddies and I talk trash at each other over Vampire Piggy Hunter” and Dib is like IT ISN’T LIKE THAT AT ALL HE’S PURE EVIL!! THE FATE OF THE WORLD IS AT STAKE!! WE ONLY TEAMED UP THOSE 80 TIMES BECAUSE IT WAS NECESSARY EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE TIMES!!! and she’s like “was it also necessary to spend 15 minutes during a space battle complaining about how much Mysterious Mysteries has gone downhill?”

Also I accidentally read that sentence as “weird detective club” and I’m so glad I did because that would be the ideal. Scooby-Doo who

"YES it was necessary! If nobody complains about how bad the show has gotten, they'll keep making episodes about FAKE PHEMONENA which will impede ACTUAL IMPORTANT RESEARCH!"
"Right. Which is why you were complaining about how bad the alien costumes were."
"ZIM says they're offensive to his people."
"Which he's telling you because you're best friends."
"I'm not understanding."
Also I would pay to see a show consisting of them just solving intergalactic mysteries. SKOODGE is the unexpected MVP who usually ends up solving the case and then ZIM and Dib fight over who gets credit after. GIR is just along for the ride.

And then Gaz is also getting dragged in. Man, I need Gaz and SKOODGE interaction ten years ago.

Oh man, SKOODGE and Gaz interaction would be great, they just tiredly get shit done as ZIM and Dib bicker in the background.
