Description "At first, I thought this was fine, but then I realized that I wanted something you don't have- friends!"  Ouch. I feel bad for her, actually. LET THE FANFICTION COMMENCE.

Anyway, what is this? A pony thing from me? It's been far too long.

No, really, it's been too long. I have to thank all you guys for being so supportive of my recent work and uploading schedule. I know that the creature design stuff isn't what you subscribed to me for, so it means a lot that you stick with me through it. I am still working on a lot of other big projects currently for y'all, though unfortunately, between my busy schedule and inherently slow working speed, they have been taking a long time to finish. So, on that note, how do you guys feel about more small sketches like this? Like, small drawings of characters and whatever. I don't like leaving my MLP stuff so sparse, but I don't want to spam your inboxes with a bunch of junk constantly. Since these take me less time to draw, they can make for some filler content between bigger submissions. Let me know your thoughts on the matter if you'd like.

Man, this mare looks severely stressed and/or hasn't slept in days. I really like this.

She owns a bridal store, so I imagine that relates to her talent.

Nice drawing. I agree I felt sorry for her at the end of the episode. Being called out by your daughter in front of a crowd. Talk about humiliating!

Thanks!
I am really curious what dinner was like that night for the Riches. That day really was a watershed for them all- especially the mother and daughter.

She looks great. The coloring is awesome, even being flat. She's really a beast isn't she?

She fits the "abusive mother" type, at least in terms of verbal abuse. It COULD be she's overcompensating for the perception of earth ponies as being social inferiors, but just as likely she's just a jerk in the same manner Starlight Glimmer is. (Also, notice she has the same/similar coat and mane colors to Rarity's mom? There might actually be a connection there!)

There's no prove that she's an abusive.

Maybe they're related.

Thanks! Coloring flat is much faster, meaning I can make these more often.

I personally don't see her quite a pure monster- it may just be me, but I feel that the moment of vulnerability she showed when Diamond Tiara brought up her friendlessness made her suddenly more 'human' to me. She suddenly seemed lonely and vulnerable, and trying to overcompensate for that by trying to rise in rank among the rich. (Though her mindset is absolutely horrid, no doubt about that. Maybe it's in retaliation for being 'rejected' by other ponies in the past? Oh jeez, I'm overanalyzing again. xD) Her horridness is still inarguable, no matter what though.

Maybe I should do things like this traditionally... But I don't like uploading traditional drawings.

Oh yeah, she's definitely more human than she seems, but she strikes me in a really weird beat.

I know what you mean! The digitizing process is so arduous for traditional work! That's one of the big reasons I don't upload my smaller traditional doodles as much anymore- it's too much effort for something not worth the time.

Mhm.

I have a scanner, and it doesn't take too long. I just don't like how they turn out.

My scanner is total junk, so I take photographs and upload them to my computer. My problem is that it never gets the textures, colors, or contrast right.

Happy to see some pony from you - and I like how you shaped 'er with the sketch style, still ends up looking wonderfully detailed. I particularly love the shaping of her body and rear legs, the lower neck and the mane. I wouldn't mind if you posted these more often, really.

She's worst pony. Really. Not from the standpoint of character quality, but from the standpoint of actually being a bad person.

I'm happy to see it from me too! It feels so good.
Thank you very much! I tried to get a certain look to her- a little more rounded, but still with some steeper curves. And don't worry- I'll absolutely do more! Especially since people seem to like this type of thing!

I agree absolutely. It is astonishing how effectively the writers managed to throw in a sudden new character, have her be one of the most horrible characters ever on the show, and somehow make her feel rather realistic and natural.

TwilightIsMagic In reply to CuttleDreams [2015-10-13 19:59:51 +0000 UTC]

Yay! Pony should feel good. It's what it's all about, after all!
And you managed that look, I believe, and did so rather well. And double yay! :iconflutteryayplz:

Yeah, it's one of the powers of pony, very lifelike characters, and now it's shown that it can introduce one and endow her with enough characterization to bring a rather nuanced yet powerful punch, all in essentially half an episode, if not less. But indeed, no matter the nuance, she has been the most disgusting non-superpowered pony antagonist so far, outstripping Suri Polomare. (Starlight doesn't count, not yet at least, not until we learn more of her; and even so, her powers seem pretty "super" for a normal pony.) And this is precisely for the reason of her being so lifelike and natural. It's the same reason Friendship Games's main antagonist is the most chillingly dark of the three even though she's a mere school principal compared to mighty magical beings capable of world conquest. It's because they're rather real, the kind of people many of us have met and dealt with in some way, the kind that isn't just "possible", but verifiably exists and isn't very hard to find. Many shows and franchises seem to shy from this sort of thing, but not pony.

Agreed!

It certainly is one of the show's greatest strength. Without such well-written and realistic characters, all the other assets would be emptier.
The comparison of Cinch and Mrs. Rich is a good parallel to make, (and I'd throw in Starlight too) for the same reasons you stated. Real life doesn't have giant smokey embodiment of fear, or dragons, or power-stealing centaurs. There are people, though, who will lie and steal to get what they want. There are parents who push their children to be something they detest, abuse their children, push them hard. There are people who take advantage of the insecurities and needs of others, people who will do anything to get ahead or get attention, people who have no sense of responsibility or empathy, people who will do anything because they have nothing left to lose. These are the villains that we remember the most, because they are embodiment of the shadows that haunt us in our own lives.

TwilightIsMagic In reply to CuttleDreams [2015-10-15 19:25:28 +0000 UTC]

Exactly so. Even if there were giant smokey fear villains, we don't exactly deal with them often, but we do have to deal with people like Spoiled Rich and Abacus Cinch every so often, and some of us, regularly. And having those people included, not in overly caricaturized and exaggerated forms, but operating fairly realistically, is a great thing for any production, particularly a franchise like FiM, what with its mood and modus operandi. With how slice-of-life it is even in adventure/dramatic modes, having such villains take center stage is not just appropriate, but highly effective, as they compliment the rest of the setup well.

Thank you very much for your kind words! I am still learning to balance my work, unfortunately, but I think I'm starting to find a rhythm, so expect more ponies in the near future!
