Description
Characters developed for Privateer Press' new card game; Infernal Contraption [link] .They each represent a different type of power used to create machines in the game. Top Left: Voltaic/Electricity, Top Right: Gear Power, Bottom Left: Chemical Energy, Bottom Right: Steam Power.
The characters were developed and pencilled by yours truely, inked by Rob Hawkins and then colored by the both of us. All in all, a fun project that I am immensely proud of. Not only was it fun to draw, it seems that a lot of people are having a lot of fun playing it.

Out of all the art I've seen for Privateer Press, the Bodgers were always my favorite particularly "Sparky" up in the top left over there. Did they ever get names or anything like that?

They need to make a video game for this, it would be sweet and play.

Picked up Infernal Contraption over the weekend. Fun game! It took us a while to sort out the rules, but we had a blast once we did. Great work my friend!

Awesome, I'm glad you're enjoying it. Its a fun little game and I was really happy to be a part of it. Hopefully, the original and the upcoming expansion will be successful enough to spawn more Gobbery goodness!

Yeah, I'm looking forward to the expansion. That's in November isn't it?
I know you did the illustrations for the game, but how much of the creation were you involved in? Was this a bunch of guys you knew, or did they contract you later? I'm just curious. I've always thought of doing work for game companies and I was wondering how you got hooked into this deal.

Yep, IC2:Sabotage will be out in November!
I only did the visual development side of the project. I'd been working freelance for Privateer Press for a while as a concept artist and Infernal Contraption was a project that the creative director had me in mind for pretty much since I'd started working with him.
I came to work for Privateer in a wierd and circuitous way, its a long story...the short of it is, I made it a goal to work for them and a lot of hard work and some incredible luck paid off.
My advice if you're going to try to work for a minis/rpg game publisher is this: go after the big guys and make them your only priority. I hate to say it, but I've know too many people who've been burned by smaller publishers - even with contracts. Even the big companies will tell you that they aren't exaclty swimming in the loot, and its only worse for the little guys. Not paying an artist can sometimes keep them afloat one more month and I've seen it too often. As a artist, its better to focus your time on more established companies and your work is certainly good enough to get work with them.

Though I love the game, your gobbers are what made it for me. They actually inspired me to start drawing again. As soon as I can get a hold of my friend's scanner I'll be uploading my versions from looking at your work on the cards.

at first i was a little uncertain about the colors used for the game, but i'm really starting to like it.

The character design is awesome, but you already knew I was going to say that.
