Description the marmont.

ah, the marmont.

i love this place. [link]

between the penthouse on the fourth floor to the penthouse on the sixth to bungalow one. each ... is just ... i dunno ...

amazing.

i feel fortunate to shoot here.

they don't let a lot of people with cameras even near their property.

this is where lindsay lives and kicks out hot blonds when she hosts an "after hours thing."

i know.

my friend has been booted by her twice.

competition.

whatever.

i think it's funny.

this is the kind of hotel i try to find in any metro city i visit.

fuck the minimalism.

fuck frills.

just character.

because i think this place attracts characters.

from the guests.

to the employees.

i mean ... this is where mr. newton died. to get in ... you have to walk right where he died.

i have four close friends who work here.

they swear that they see ghosts.

perhaps mr. newton watches over photographers here.

what's interesting ... maybe not to you ... but to me ... is that ... 2 years ago i was hired by a magazine to shoot mr. newton the night he died.

i was at a cartier party.

he was supposed to be there and i was supposed to get "the shot" in b/w of mr. newton.

i arrived.

and ... i heard from a friend at the ap that another ap shooter was almost hit by newton when she was on sunset.

my friend knew how much i admired mr. newton's work and wanted me to know.

i threw up in my mouth a little.

the very day i'm supposed to have a few seconds ... maybe more than a few ...

he has a heart attack whilst driving...

crashes into the wall...

and dies.

very sad, indeed.

belushi died here too.

countless others have been rushed away in various states of consciousness.

countless hopefuls have gotten their knees dirty here for various reasons.

but i was outside...

having a smoke ...

and max from boston asked for a smoke.

of course.

and he sat on the stoop of bungalow one and smoked.

and i got one frame.

which ... i quite like.

because ... honestly ... i shoot for myself.

and i love shooting at this hotel.

you really should try lunch on the patio in the fall. or spring.

or anything ...

for THIS ... is los angeles.

the way it's meant to be.

forget what you read in the tabloids.

leica mp. 35/1.4 summilux. 1/125th at f/2.8. agfa apx100. exposed and processed normal. NOT A DIGITAL PHOTO. LAB SCAN.

p.s., and, yes, max from boston came here to be an actor.

A truly beautiful shot

"This is dreamland" according to The Marmont site - and so it would appear.

Tonight I shall dream of padding barefoot through corridors listening for ghosts and looking for secrets - and sharing a cigarette in silence.

definitely like the story behind the photo, that always makes them stronger, I think. Love how his eyes are closed as if he's picturing himself somewhere else...or just relaxing...only thing I have to comment on is that distracting white blob..thing at the bottom..

Cool shot of someone taking a break from the hectic life inside ... and also a metaphor for someone whol probably will never be really part of what goes on inside.

month late, but that's okay.

i love the story behind the photo as much as i love the photo. it exudes the los angeles romanticism that not many get to hear about.

cheers, goodluck, and godspeed.

the clarity of your leica b/w shots pisses me off so crisp, yet smooth.
his eyes being shut add another dimension to it, not deliberate, but nice nonetheless.

like the story behind this place -- each -- has something to tell -- in time all secrets are revealed -- like the capture -- raw and to the point -- later days (oh thanks for the advice on the camera -- unfortunately didn't get -- he somehow found out and didn't want it -- so i told him that when he's ready just ask) -- later days

another great photograph. i don't say that to flatter, but simply because i have to, it's true. your gallery always knocks my socks off! sometimes i find myself debating over which i enjoyed more; your photo or your story. you write so well... even when you're swearing your ass off... wait, ESPECIALLY when you're swearing your ass off!

well, i loved it, yet again!

One of the things that makes your shots so emotive is the fact that you describe the story and set the scene.
you give the viewera taste of your emotions, be it intentional or not. An all round brilliant shot, through and through.

Your photo is very relaxing and excudes calmness, thank you for posting it and for posting your sad story about Mr. Helmut Newton, pity you didn't get to shoot him.

There is an exhibition in my city at the moment (Melbourne, Down Under) with a numbers of Helmuts in it [link] it is breathtaking

Yeah, capturing that tiny moment in time, and being able to study it at length... I think some great insights into people can be gleaned that way. Things they wouldn't tell you or let slip any other way sometimes.

This is such a peaceful shot. Is he an employee of the hotel or something? It's a shame he didn't strike it big, he's a very handsome man.

All boy-crazy-ness aside, I truly admire you, Chris. I admire your love for film and the passion you put into your photography. I wish all photographers had the same motivation you do.

Yeah, this is indeed a very nice hotel! Very luxurious, very unique... So your friends swear they see ghosts there? I have never really believed in that stuff, only because it's never truly happened to me. The day it does, maybe I’ll believe..... Must feel weird though going, and knowing that something like that may happen to you at any time.
Did not know about the death, very sad indeed. L.A has a lot more to offer than just traffic, theme parks and crazy people --- you’re right. Some people can't see it, EVEN if they live there. Great shot, emotive I’d say. And most of all, it's personal; those are the shots we are meant to enjoy more!
