Description

Akesis was disorientated. She had been hunting for days, desperately searching for any scrap of meat which might keep her and her tiny pride alive. Since the flood, they had been struggling. As their Queen, it was her job to find them something to eat. That’s when she came across a zebra carcass; fresh, and mostly in-tact.

The lioness was just about to clamp her jaws around it when a golden head popped up from the other side. Akesis jumped back, startled by the sudden movement. It seemed the zebra was already claimed. The claimant was a young lioness – probably somewhere between adolescence and young adulthood – and the scowl she wore told Sissy that she’d just made a huge mistake.

“Back off,” snarled the lioness, flopping a large paw protectively over her kill. “This here’s mine.”

“I’m sorry,” started Akesis, taking a few steps back in case she needed to make a hasty retreat. “I didn’t realise it was yours. I won’t take it.”

“You certainly won’t,” barked the stranger, lips twitching in agitation and anticipation. “One more move and I’ll kill you.”

“Why are you being so aggressive? This was all a misunderstanding. Is it because of your leg?” asked the Queen, her brassy eyes hovering over the other’s wounded back limb. Injured animals tended to be defensive, but crikey, this one was a livewire. The cut looked bad. How had she brought down a zebra with a bad leg? “Did you hurt yourself bringing this down? Where’s your family?”

Her questions were met with a snarl. “It’s none of your business, you nosey bitch. I said back off.” The female hauled herself momentarily to her paws, before falling back down again. Akesis edged forward, wanting to help, but was met with a glare. “I don’t need your help. This kill is mine.”

“I don’t want to steal from you!” Akesis cried, exhausted by this entire interaction. “If you stay out here with your leg in that state, you’ll die! Please, let me help you.”

“Enough,” snapped the golden lioness, agitated by all the attention. “You have all of five seconds to get out of my face before I snap you in half like a twig. GO!”

What should Akesis do?

Stay and try to help the lioness; it'd be wrong to leave her.

Leave - the lioness is aggressive and clearly doesn't want help.
