A couple of weeks ago I got some really good advice.
After taking a good look at my gallery from a little distance and ascertaining that it looks very gaudy I was advised to try colour schemes rather than colouring book kind of colour choices.

I found the pencils for this a few days ago. It was half done about 2 years ago in summer and it never got finished for I started hating it midway.
Now I didn't hate it anymore but since I wasn't attached to it, either, experimenting didn't require daring.

I wanted a spring-ish colour scheme - winter has been too long! - and that is why it ended up with green and pink. It still isn't good (that doll-ish face is really bugging) but at least it is one of those first steps.
