Description
ALRIGHT! So I've been building up these races for awhile so it's finally time to get stuff out thereSeaQuestria:
Current Duke: Sir Tidal Song
Prince: Phorcys
Princess: Brizo
Mermares:
Central Kingdom: Atlantrot Ocean
Attributes: Long noses, curled tails, lots of fins, softer colors, magical singing,
These are the highest class of SeaQuestria. The mermares are said to be the first of the races brought into being. They are the wealthy class, living in lush castles with their cities being the most economically successful. Most consider themselves higher than any of the other races and the overall Duke of the Sea is a mermare.
While all of the seas are under Queen Luna's control, the individual kingdoms have their own rules with one king on top. The leader is always a male but the city rules are always female. it basically works like this, one Duke oversees all the kingdoms and each kingdom has one Duchesses who report back to the Duke.
The culture of mermares is one all about image. Reputation and physical appearance is everything. One reason the mermares despise the other races is that they consider themselves to be purebred, anything with hooves is considered "lesser". Not every mermare is like this but most are and growing up they are taught to be that way.
Alliances:
Hippocampi: Tolerates them as their above-sea military is useful.
Merponies: Require their craft/goods and appreciate them being the closest relative to Mermare.
Hippocampi: Indireign Ocean
Central Kingdom: Mount Aris (On the mountain and below)
Attributes: Ability to switch between sea and sky, very agile, able to use magic, very bright colors
Hippocampi are the race seen prominently in MLP Cannon. The only difference here is that they were a race of seapony first then gained the ability to go on land. They became over ambitious as a military focused group and wanted to take their armies above the seas. (for context, Land dwellers had started to find their islands that marked their home and were polluting their home) With the lead of Duchess Stella, they found the magic pearl's true potential and rose to the skies as hippogriff. They ruled in peace for many many years until the accursed Storm king ravaged the land out past the islands. He was approaching soon and the hippogriffs had no choice but to return to the sea to rejoin the half of the tribe who never left. They relied on the Mermares grace to be able to rebuild their kingdom with half the population suddenly back. Since then they have been the personal military of the mermares.
Alliances:
Mermares: Mentioned above
Land Dwellers: MLP cannon
Merponies:
Central Kingdom: Antartequine Sea
Attributes: Seal-like faces, slick bodies, darker colors, close connection to the sea, powerful tails, thicker overall (blubber)
The Merponies are one of the most reserved SeaQuestrian races. They are a people of art and craft, the tinkerers of the undersea world. Their deeper connection with the flora of the sea allows them to manipulate and use materials to create masterful art pieces or brilliant new inventions. While SeaQuestria is leagues behind Equestria in terms of 'technology', they have an extremely complicated and profound use of art that goes deeper than any Equestrian could make. Because they use so much material for their work, they are also in charge of most of the gardening in the kingdoms.
Merponies live in the colder climates of the sea. While some can be found in warmer waters, their thick blubber makes them able to withstand icy cold water. When visiting the warmer living races, they use a specific spell taught to all merponies that keeps a thin veil of cold water surrounding them. It lasts 3 days and must be recast before the time runs out otherwise they cannot perform the spell until they get back to cold water.
Their culture is one of self sacrifice and gentleness. They are always taught to give back whatever you take and are all very conservative. Some choose not to speak and it's pretty much a majority of introverts. The elders are highly respected and only elders may serve as Duchess. Their cities are much smaller and more 'rural' compared to the other races but not many visit due to the cold water. They continue the old Greek tradition of Xenia where if a stranger approaches and asks for help, you help without question and always leave your door unlocked.
Alliances:
Everyone, they don't really do enemies
Sea Ponies:
Central Kingdom: Pacifilly Ocean
Attributes: Half pony, half Mermare, can have wings, horn or neither, always have pony ears, only race with fur, only 'spike' fins, manes
The lowest of the main races are the seaponies. Seaponies are also the smallest race as they stemmed from a land-dweller and Mermare relationship, making them "un-pure" in the eyes of Mermares. They have unique abilities to either fly in the air, use little bits of Equestrian magic or even walk on land if given Earth pony magic. Even with their strong adaptability, they remain under the Mermare's rule. The seaponies are used as the 'worker class' doing odd jobs and running stores that the other races don't want to do. Most are blissfully unaware that their situation is poor but the few who figure it out often leave or are imprisoned. In recent years, since Queen Luna reclaimed her throne after 1000 years, the Mermares have eased off and simply leave seaponies to do their thing somewhere away from the major cities. Because of the already low population to begin with mixed with the harsh punishments in the past, there really aren't that many seaponies around. Just a few small, scattered, towns and one major city for their whole race.
Their culture is one based in family. Seaponies very much value their families and often have multiple generations living under one roof, all working for each other. The duchess herself often visits many families, trying to bond with as many as she can making their kingdom the most tight knit in SeaQuestria. While they have to work long days, they are mostly content and aren't in the worst conditions.
Seaponies are strictly warm water SeaQuestrians and almost never see the Merponies. The seaponies, however, are the only race (well besides hippopriffs now) to have a strong connection to the land dwellers. The Sytonies, seaponies gifted with earth pony magic, take the goods to the surface for trade. Often, some Aereonies, seaponies gifted with pegisai magic, will follow, however they cannot remain out of the water for longer than 5 hours. The final group, the Perytonies, gifted with the magic of Unicorns, stay behind and can only really interact with sailor ponies (they're the ones that started the Sirens myth back up again, freaking out sailors). The three tribes live in harmony and act similar to the three Equestrian tribes.
Alliances:
Mermares: the Mermares rule over them
Depth Dwellers:
Central Kingdom: Unknown, located somewhere in Mareianas Trench
Attributes: Long slender bodies, fins on arms act as second arms, manes, rigid back, angler light that can use magic, strongest users of magic, glowing eyes, cannot go to surface, dark colors with bright eyes and manes
The Depth Dwellers are a different kind of Seapony. When Luna first ruled over the seas, before nightmare moon, most SeaQuestrians disregarded her and her night, casting her out as a weak ruler and the night only hindered them. When Luna finally turned and took over both Equestria and SeaQuestria as nightmare moon, a few loyal SeaQuestrians choose to side with the Queen. When she was banished, they continued to remain loyal but were banished by the other SeaQuestrians to the depths where they were forced to adapt to the freezing, dark depths of the Mareianas Trench. In their struggles to adapt, they learned how to control magic, which saved them in the end. Slowly they took on the form they have now and the history books forgot about them. In present day SeaQuestria, very few know about the Depth Dwellers, only known as monsters to keep the children from misbehaving. Queen Luna has searched for them and continues but she has so far been unsuccessful in finding them.. Are they really gone for good?
Alliances:

THAT WAS A LOT WOW
lol sorry I just really love this idea of a whole subculture (lol) beneath the seas of Equestria. I think I'll do a post of their history but that's for another time

I can't help but feel like the Merpony (I believe it's the dark purple/lilac one) seems like someone who would do belly dance lol

Multiple races of aquatic ponies? I'm totally on board. As I see in some other comments, I'm not the only one saddened by the show's rendering of 'sea ponies,' and the way they're only hippogriff in disguise.

Gorgeous stylings and exactly what I'd love to see in the show.
(Also thank you so much for calling the seaponies "Hippocampi" it's a distinction I wish the show would have made. I understand WHY they did it, but even still, thank you!)

Thank you!!
And I totally agree! When they said the queen of the hippos in the movie I totally thought they were going to be hippocampi vs hippogryphs

For me, it's confusing. But mind you, I've over thought this to no end...
On Land= Pony+Bird
In Water= Pony+Fish
What happens to the "bird" or "fish" aspect of them when they're in their alternate forms? There are changelings who literally CHANGE into other beings, so can you combine those parts differently? Can you be both a Bird+Fish in a hidden 3rd form? Why even have the hippogriffs turn into seaponies? Can't we just have seaponies? Are they TRULY seaPONIES if they're actually HIPPOGRIFFS? If they're hippogriff couldn't they just have flown away from the Storm King?
I just don't know why we couldn't have plain ol' "shoo be doo shoo shoo be doo" sea ponies AND regular ol' hippogriffs.
It's a never ending spiral of confusion and questions and digging too deep for the MLP Movie, which was cute but didn't really do much.

I know right!! I was kinda upset that they had to make seaponies be a false form of the real hippogriffs! Like, the seaponies don't exist outside of being a cover for the Hippogriffs and thats so unfair

Oh god I love all these concepts for Seaponies of all sorts! It makes sense that there would be all sorts of varieties since the seas are vast and deep and there would be all sorts of niches for sea-based equines to fill out. The Depth Dwellers in particular are a cool design...!

It seemed silly that Equestria had all this diversity of life and the sea just had a race of bird ponies that we're disguised as sea ponies? nah haha

In the current years, no nopony has actively seen one. The last time one was spotted was the first day Luna returned back in Season 1 as Nightmare moon. On the outskirts of Atlantrot, a patrol spotted one, or at least they thought they did.

I can imagine how terrifying that must have been. I glowing light coming out of the darkest parts of the sea. That would give me nightmares for weeks lol.
Also, can Luna breathe underwater in your universe? Since she controls the waves and whatnot?

For sure! The guards were so spooked, took em a whole day to get the full story
Luna has an alternate form that's a combination of the SeaQuestrian races. When she gained control over the seas, she was granted the knowledge of the spell that transforms her. Only the ruler of the seas has this knowledge and she cannot share it even if she wanted to.

That's so cool!! Those poor guards!
If it's not spoilers who told Luna the spell? In your bio about Luna, you wrote that Starswirl freed Celestia,
do you follow the canon where it says that Starswirl taught both of them? How was he affected by Luna becoming Nightmare Moon?
(sorry, this is random. It was just something I was thinking about)
Do the Seaponies appreciate the night now that Luna is back? Do they sea (lol) her as their ruler overall?
Also, how did that spell come about? Also, did Luna being gone affect how the moon affected the sea?
Like did Celestia gain temporary control of the sea until Luna returned or did the sea continue to just do its thing?

Ill make a post about how the two sisters came about their powers in the future
I don't follow the cannon about StarSwirl. I think the show gives him waaaaay too many things to have done considering his cannon personality. For my purposes, he was a close friend of Celestia's and had a short relationship with her that didn't amount to anything. Luna knows him through Tia and thus isn't 'friends' with him, that's why she forgot about him when she was Nightmare Moon. Starswirl was an incredibly talented, spell writer and he often had Celestia preform his more difficult spells. His actual magic was just barely above average.
Starswirl was incredibly angry at Luna for turning and becoming Nightmare moon. Had he lived to see her return, he wouldn't have forgiven her. There was too much bitterness in his heart.
Yes, the seaponies now understand what the night meant for them after experiencing an age without Luna guiding the moon. Celestia was overwhelmed when Luna was banished, suddenly she had to control both celestial bodies and the three realms, sky earth and sea. She wasn't able to juggle it for even one week. Understanding that it was too much, Celestia took care of her own duties and had a small group devoted to carrying out Luna's duties. This became her school for friendship. While the gifted unicorns were able to maintain a level of peace, nothing was the same. The moon no longer had a beautiful glow, the stars could barely been seen, if at all, and any plants that relied on the Moon's rays versus the suns died. Most of said plants belonged to SeaQuestria as a majority of their diet consisted of plants that used moonlight to grow. As for the sea itself, it became a wild hurricane of a disaster. The sirens were released due to the spell on their prison being broken when the sea went into turmoil. The SeaQuestrians went into the darkest time of their history with battles and the start of the Seapony oppression. More and more sea monsters emerged and the waves wrecked most sea towns. There was nothing any unicorn could do, the magic of the seas was a power granted only to one pony at a time and could not be passed down until their death.
wow that was a lot haha, hopefully I answered your questions!

Woah, thank you so much for answering all my questions!
I'm super excited to see what headcanon you have about how they came about their powers!
Do you have the pillars in your story or are they regaled to myths/legends?
Nightmare Moon reigned for over 100 years in your story (which makes so much more sense) did she have a moon monster army
and were there groups of ponies that wanted to rebel?
All I'm saying is this is what happens when you don't appreciate the beauty
of the night! I'm sure the SeaQuestrians regretted not appreciating Luna.
Also, are you going to go into more backstory about Luna and Celestia's relationship before and after she became Nightmare Moon?

CyanReef In reply to Lunafea [2018-10-02 04:57:16 +0000 UTC]
The pillars will come up later once Discord introduces himself for the 'first time'. Discord's ultimate defeat, as well as most disasters following, is tied to the Pillars. Ill probably do a quick post on them someday but they don't play a major role other than establishing the elements. I don't like that the show just kinda threw them in there so I don't feel I need to make them significant.
All batponies you see in current equestria were followers of nightmare moon. Luna gave them a second chance, just as Equestria did for her, by allowing them to become bat ponies and serve under her. Those who rejected the idea were banished from equestria and all went their own ways. Occasionally there's an issue from a small group of them but most ponies choose loyalty to the sisters so the threat is never gigantic. However, there was one incident where a rather powerful follower started to go his own path, following Nightmare moons hoofsteps in the dark arts. Not much is known about him, only that he disappeared near the crystal empire up north... Odd.. his disappearance wasn't that far off from when the evil King Sombra rose up.. oh well probably a coincidence.
Oh man, they sure do. Since they figured out how to make lanturns, nightlife is never more busy in SeaQuestria. They decided to adapt so much to Luna's new rule that their schedule runs very different from Equestria. They begin their days at noon and finish deep into the night. Luna lowkey wants to cry because she loves them so much but she never would in front of anypony...except maybe Tidal Song :>
Yes! When I do Celestia's bio I plan to explain the two's relationship along with all the relationships Tia has had.
