You captured the emotion perfectly. I am looking at a woman who just lost everything and came to the realization that maybe now she can be free.

In "Geisha, A Life" written by Mineko Iwasaki the geisha Memoirs was based on, the woman who I presume is represented by Hatsumomo instead become's the protagonist's beloved big sister.

From what I gathered, Mineko Iwasaki was one of several geisha on which Memoirs is based on. But she was very displeased with how the book turned out, especially with the mizuage bit.
Now I don't know what went on between her and Arthur Golden but, in my humble opinion, it's probably best for the two books to be treated as separate.

I love this book/ movie, and I love Hatsumomo. I felt bad for her from the beginning.

Me too. Despite her bitterness I couldn't help but be fascinated and feel sorry for her at the same time.

Hatsumomo is such a character...so easy to dislike, but she didn't choose her life, even though she choose how to behave.

She was weaker. A lot weaker than Chiyo. And destructive.
But these are the characters that are the most interesting

Truth. She hated everyone, and herself most I think. I've wondered for time time what a book from her perspective would be like. Probably too depressing and vitriolic to get far into.

It would probably resemble Cersei's point of view chapters from the Ice and Fire saga, if you're familiar with it.
Only less sadistic and twisted.

Your probably right with that, before the events in Feast for Crows where she really started to lose it.

Beautiful! I wanted for someone to capture this moment from the movie. Hatsumomo is the character I love to hate and love to pity.

Thank you. Yes, I think this is one of the few scenes where we get to see and understand why she is the way she is.

This and earlier when we see how genuinely happy and charmed she is by her boyfriend in the alleyway. Another of my favorite scenes.
