Note of Beth

“Beth, you need to lose more weight!” Marianne yelled at her young daughter. Her ears were folded in anger, and her tail stood straight as she glared at her daughter, Beth.

Beth was around the age of ten at this time, but she was definitely ahead in beauty. Her eyes were a deep-yellow, like shining ambers. She definitely had her mother’s figure, and her father’s bright eyes.

“But mom, I’m only ten pounds overweight. Most young girls aren’t thin like those models on TV.” Beth sighed as she stepped off the bathroom scale, giving a reading of eighty pounds. Beth was only ten pounds overweight, but that didn’t matter to Marianne.

“I don’t care! Do you want to be a model?! Models are beautiful and thin, and you’re thick and fat!” Marianne exclaimed as she grabbed a roll of Beth’s slightly pudgy belly.

“Stop it! Stop pinching my fat!” Beth cried as she ran out of the bathroom, sobbing as she slammed the door to her room. Laying her face into her pillow, Beth let out tears, tears of sadness and the inability to live to her mother's standards.

Ten years later, Beth was now an adult. Her eyes hadn’t changed from her childhood, nor had her pudgy belly. Only now it was a bigger, plump belly. Beth walked down the beach, eating a cone of ice cream. However, she did notice something on the beach.

It was women, thin and attractive women, in bikinis that revealed more skin than she’d ever seen. Beth looked at her own belly, remembering something that her mother said many years ago.

“You’re not pretty or beautiful, you’re just an ugly sack of flesh!”

“No handsome man will ever love you when you’re fat!”

“You’ll die fat and alone!”

“You’ll never be able to wear swimwear! Only beautiful women can wear them!”

“Get out of my head!” Beth shrieked as she ran down the beach, running to a port-a-potty, locking herself inside.

As Beth attempted to collect herself, her iPhone began to ring, playing one of her favorite songs. Beth sighed as she picked up the phone, seeing that her mother was calling.

“No more. I’m not taking your model crap anymore.” Beth declared as she turned off her phone, placing it back in her red bag before leaving the port-a-potty.

A few hours later, Beth was at her friend Valerie’s house. Valerie was a chubby red fox, with white markings on her body. She also had a purplish-red shade of hair, which was she wore long and beautiful. Along with Valerie was Brittany, a grey and white squirrel with the most adorable smile.

“So, how did things with your mother go today?” Valeria asked Beth, which made her look a bit sad.

“I didn’t call her back.” Beth sighed as she took a bit of her hamburger.

“Oh, why not?” Brittany asked, tilting her head in confusion.

“Because I’m tired of-”

Before Beth could finish her sentence, her phone began to ring. Beth sighed as she picked it up and turned it on, then dropping the phone as tears began to fall down her cheeks.

“What happened?” Valerie asked her friend while Brittany picked up the phone, then gasping.

“Beth, your mom’s in the hospital,” Brittany gasped as she attempted tried to compose herself, “Your mother had a heart attack, she might not make it.”

“How did she get a heart attack at her age?!” Valerie questioned Beth, which made her lose complete control over her sadness.

“My mom would do anything to stay thin, so she did things,” Beth cried as wet tears flowed down her chubby and furry cheeks, “She took things, ate less, and when all else failed, she purged.”

And this, this was the revelation made to these three friends. It wasn’t Beth’s mother who was the one at fault, but society itself. The model life is so cherished and loved, but those nasty side-effects are pushed aside for “beauty”.

Wow... that's... that's heavy stuff. I'm not sure how I feel about this, but when you send a message, you don't sugarcoat things.

Thanks. As soon as I heard about the contest, I wanted to write something about Beth's mom, and how its not her fault that acts the way she does, its society's fault.
