Description
And one from four months ago. Well, at least that's all for the backlog.
This one, simply called Mr. Red for now, is a concept for the main character of a shmup concept of mine, firmly in the bullet hell domain, yet somewhat more accessible than most titles of the genre. In a nutshell, the concept is Touhou meets Iron Man. It's a vertical bullet hell shooter with the characters fighting by themselves, not in some faceless vehicle, able to talk to each other, and therefore the game has a focus on the characters, kinda like Touhou. The means for the characters fighting are flying powered armors and heavy weaponry, somewhat reminescent of Iron Man. Still, while those two are the main influences, this concept has been taken inspiration in many other things, like Gundam, Mega Man, Ace Combat, Armored Core, Guilty Gear, Metal Slug, and I'm probably forgetting a few. For example, the means of propulsion is very Gundam-like, being mostly achieved with a backpack of vernier thrusters.
There is a big problem here with this pic. I shaded in parts, not the whole. I fell victim to the thought processes that lead people to pillow shade. By missing the forest for the trees, I ended up making the shading a mess. I'll have to practice lighting and try to heve a proper mindset when shoding pictures.
Anyway, this guy is the archetypical shot type 1 of two playable characters. The slower, less powerful one with easier to land shots, either due to spread or homing projectiles, over the faster, more powerful, but with harder to hit with straight shots. With his default loadout (Yep, default, I'm playing with the idea of letting you change weapons. Remember how I said mega Man was an inspiration?) being a huge gatling gun he can only lift because of his armor and homing missile options, you could say, in Touhou terms, that he's a sort of Reimu equivalent.
I'm going to need to redesign the armor. It doesn't quite look high tech enough, and I need to have it with mechanical parts that at least hint at the armor's capability to enhance the wearer's strength. I did play with the idea of having a layer or artificial muscle under the armor, and I'm probably going to have that in the end for the more precise movements, I want some visible machinery on the major joints. It's probably going to have some mecha musume-esque elements, not in the sense of its usual application in scantily clad girls with some mecha armor plates on them, but I kinda want the armors to look somewhat like wearable mecha. The character himself may also suffer some redesigns, but the nagaideburns are non-negotiable.
The second player character's supposed to be a chick in blue armor. I didn't feel comfortable drawing her at the time because I sucked at drawign the female body. I still do a bit, but I'm getting better. Me making this picture was the last in a long series of catalysts that ende up having major repercussions on my activities and the future content of this page.
