Master Splinter

Alias: Hamato Yoshi

Species: Human / Mutant rat

Hamato Yoshi was once a member of a noble ninja clan in Japan alongside fellow member Oruko Saki, who was like a brother to him. However, their relationship became strained when both met a beautiful young woman named Tang Shen, whom they both have an affection for. Tang Shen chose Yoshi as her lover which made Saki jealous and resentful towards the latter to the point of vengeance. One dark night, Saki attacked Yoshi in his temple home attempting to kill him but ended up killing Tang Shen when she came to protect Yoshi and their newborn daughter. Devastated at Tang Shen's death, Saki blamed Yoshi for it and convinced the clan that he killed her in cold blood and thus Yoshi was banished and exiled from the clan. Alone, Hamato Yoshi migrated to New York where he seeked refuge in the dark alleys full of rats until eventually relocating into the sewers. In the sewers, Yoshi discovered four stranded baby turtles covered in a strange purple ooze. He recovered the four turtles, coming into contact with the ooze on them and promising to take care of them. Later one night, Yoshi woke up to see that he has become a large rat and the baby turtles have doubled in size and now possess human-like intelligence and the ability to speak. Over the years that followed, Yoshi, renamed "Splinter", raised the turtles as his sons and trained them in the art of ninjitsu all the way to their teens. While overprotective and reluctant of letting his sons go to the surface, Splinter gives the responsibility of becoming true ninjas and eventually the guardians of New York.
