Description
I decided to do a quick redesign after being on a Balto kick for the last couple of months. Every night before I go to bed, I put on a film to knock out to, and I've been choosing Balto lately. A few design choices have been bothering me, so wanted to try my hand at drawing the characters as I think what would be a bit more accurate to their species while also keeping their character in mind.

BALTO:
Balto mentions that one of his parents is a wolf while the other is a dog, making him a mid-content wolf-dog! Mid-contents look so similar to their pure wolf counterparts, that it's almost impossible to tell the difference. Some wolfdog traits that Balto didn't originally have in his design that I wanted to put in were blended markings, a narrow chest, rounded ears, and long, lanky legs. To me, the only thing that the film got right about Balto's wolf-dog trait's were his big paws that they make a point to mention throughout. I wanted to keep Balto's signature brown fur and yellow eyes.

JENNA AND STEELE:
It is presumed that Jenna and Steele are huskies, even though Steele's size correlates more with a Malamute. I feel that the film really botched the sizing between a husky and wolfdog. So, of course, I made them smaller.
I kept Jenna's red fur but added a tiny bit more markings to make her more husky-like. I kept her brown puppydog eyes and soft smile. To me, there really weren't a lot of changes that needed to be made to her aside from her size.
For Steele, he got a serious downgrade. Real huskies would NEVER tower over a wolf-dog like Steele does. I know a lot of his intimidation factor comes from his massive size and hunched body, but for the sake of realism, I shrunk him as well. I kept his ice blue eyes and jet black fur.
I made both of their paws small compared to Balto's, and pointed their ears, which is a big difference between wolfy looking dogs and actual wolves. I kept their broad chests, which is another thing dogs do not share with wolves. I also kept their masks and did not blend their markings and furred Balto's ears more.

Some things I kind of slacked on was keeping the skull size realistic. A husky's skull wouldn't be close to the size of a wolf-dog's, but I wanted to keep them similar to each other for the character's sake. I also slacked a bit on height and could have been more realistic with it.

Now, I am no professional and I definitely don't consider myself a phentotyper, but I wanted to make this with what limited skills and knowledge I have so I could show the difference between wolf-dog's and wolfy-looking dogs with some loveable characters from mt childhood! I hope you all enjoy!

I plan on doing this with a few more characters, but if you all have any character requests don't be afraid to let me know!
