Newborn

It was late on a very rainy September day as a man walked down a street, drenched and soaked from the sudden downpour

that came out of nowhere. Tired from a long day at a dead end job, he took a slow walk to his home which was a block away.

He thought about his life and where it was going as people started to stare and judge him as they ran and walked by, some

wondering 'why doesn't he have an umbrella, or why is walking so slow?' But he didn't care much about their opinions, he

just wanted to be left alone.

After ten minutes of walked through heavier rain, puddles of water that reached up to his ankles, and more stared and views,

he finally reached his hobble of a home, an old studio apartment that was given to him by his best friend before he pasted away

just two months again from complications from cancer. It was fully furnished and paid for, as his friend had a thriving business

in the electronics, making stronger frames and more durable components for phones and tablets. He had wanted this man to

take over for him as the new CEO of the company since he helped come up with and made a few of the pitch models. He declined

though, saying that he wasn't ready yet. His friend smiled, knowing he was right, so he said that his sister, Sarah, would take

over until he was ready to shoulder the responsibility. But that was such a long time ago; and with his death, that dealt a deep

blow to him as he went into seclusion, not having much contact with most people other than Sarah and his mom Joanne.

He looked up at the gray clouded sky, listening to the light thunder as it calmed him a little bit before he stepped into the foyer.

He shook off his clothes, trying not to track water into the building as he took a look at the mailbox. He looked down the names

on the shared box as he finally found his: “Hmm.. Zack and... And Frank... I need to change that one day.” He then got his mail

and walked up into the front of the building, seeing a few of the people that lived on the floors below him. “Hello Miss Fran.” He

as he passed by an older woman that lived by the steps. She was a kind woman who was about five foot tall, brown/reddish hair,

slim build that showed she kept her body in shape in her age. She had blueish/green eyes that melded into brown with a smile that

could heal any wound. “Oh hello dear! How was work today?” She asked as she looked for the keys for her door in her big and

'seasoned' pocketbook. “It was ok, SSDD you know?” he said gently, leaving a small trail of water steps as he walked to the stairs.

“Ahh.. I remember those days dear! And.. And you're all wet hun..” She said as she finally found her keys and saw him, drenched

from walking in the rain. “Hun, you didn't walk home again did you?” She asked him. He nodded as he looked at his puddles near

his shoes. “Dear, were you thinking about him again?” He nodded slightly. “It wasn't your fault he died, you couldn't have known

that day nor could you have changed it. He had a happy life, and he would want you to live a happy one too.” She said as he gave

him a tight hug. That was the best thing about Miss Fran, she would always be there to give good advice and hugs when you

needed them, even when you are soaked to the bone. “Hmm.. I know Miss F. It just gonna take some time, that's all.” He said

as he hugged her back, trying not to get her wet. She smiled as she released him and looked into his eyes, trying to see the

happy man she once knew. “I know dear, just take it easy ok? And take a long soak, so you don't catch a cold.” She said to him

as she started to turn the key in the door and walk through the doorway. “Take care Zack..” “I will. And thank you.” With that,

he walked up the stairs to his floor, not wanting to soak the elevator as he climbed up three flights of steps to get to his

apartment. As he walked down the long hall, he saw his other neighbor, John Harvey. John is a conceited but somewhat nice guy

that wouldn't give most people trouble unless he had one of his famous parties that could get out of hand rather quickly. He stood

about a little under six foot, fine blonde that ran down to his shoulders which made him look like a hippie at times when it was

parted just right. His cobalt blue eyes complemented his face greatly, making him look like a movie star as his well chiseled body

would make most women swoon. “Hey buuuddy..” He said as he was in a drunken stupor. “Oh, hey John.” Zack said as he wished

to get by him before he would be forced into a chat. “Why are you allllll...... Aalll.. Um, wet?” “I was walking in the rain John.”

He said, trying move but was being block as John wobbled back and forth from wall to wall. “I was in the rain John.” He said as he

tried to get past him again. “Rain? Uh.. It's raining?” He asked, finally slumping down the wall to the floor. “Yes John, its raining.”

“Oh...” He said before he passed out on the floor, sleeping soundly as Zack walked to his door.

After he entered his home, he sighed gently, setting his keys on the table near the door as he walked to his couch. It was a worn

tan couch that had seen better days, with a few patches on it to cover some overdo repairs. He sighed as he got up, realizing that

he was going to ruin the couch even more if he didn't change first and soak his couch with his clothes.

He groaned as he slumped up the stairs to go to his room, passing by a few high class paintings and art work as he finally made it

to the top, starting to strip off his wet things as he went to his room and got a robe on, closed the door and walked to his bathroom

and tub. He closed the door and turned on the tub, slowly stepping into the warm and soothing water before being fully immersed

in it, slowly sinking beneath the surface, relaxing for once today.

As the rainfall grew heavier into the night, a lone skinny woman and her equally skinny daughter, walked up and down this same

neighborhood, trying to find some shelter from the harsh and bone chilling downpour. Their breathes could be seen as they huddled

together, trying to find some warmth as they stumbled onto a short stoop that led a familiar doorway. The mother was sighed,

holding her daughter close as she took off her jacket and placed it around her shivering body. “It will be ok baby. Just wait and see..”

She said, wiping away the cold tears running down the child's face. “Just wait here, I'll go and try to find us some food alright?” She

said with kind and warming voice. The little girl nodded as she looked deep into her mother's eyes, seeing comfort there. “I'll be back

as soon as I can baby. Just stay here.” That was the last thing she heard as her mother run back into the rain, disappearing down

the street as fog started to roll in and blocked her view of anything beyond the stoop, encasing her in this small realm. After a few

minutes of waiting, she got tired of standing and sat down on the steps, looking vigilantly for her mother's return. After a few hours,

she started to get worried, waiting to go out to find her mother but was scared to as the fog got thicker and the sounds around them

got stranger to her. She shivered even more as the night went on, holding herself tightly as she backed up into the door. She looked

up at the light that was shining down on her, trying to reach up to feel its warmth as she got up and saw the names of the people that

lived in this building. She read a few of the names and tried to press the buttons to reach them through the intercom. She tried the

first one, but the button was stuck from the cold air of the night. She then tried another one, but had the same result. She ran down

the list of all of the names that had lights by them, all either not responding or the buttons to their apartments were stuck and

unresponsive. After some time with trying the buttons, she had succumb to the cold, slipping in and out of consciousness as her hopes

for help were waning, and dwindling fast. But she summoned all the strength she had remaining to ring the last bell, which, as fortune

would have it, was the only one that worked.

Up in the apartment, the buzzer's ring was heard in all of the rooms, ringing loudly as it echoed throughout.

Zack smiled as he came out of the bathroom, groaning in relief as he made his way to his closest to get a change of clothes. As he

entered into the door, he heard the buzzer going off all over his apartment. He sighed as he walked to the intercom and pushed the

'Talk' button to see who it was. “Hello?” He said as he waited by to hear a response, but heard nothing. “Hello......?” He said again,

still not hear a reply. Now he was getting a little worried as he tried it one more time. “Hello? Is anyone there??” He said, trying to

reach the person on the other end one more time.

As the little girl struggled to keep her awake, she slowly closed her eyes from the numbness she was feeling throughout her body,

barely hearing the voice from the intercom as she reached up to the button with the last of her strength and said in a whisper:

“H-help... Me.... Please...”

He could barely make out the words 'Help me..' before he rushed down his stairs and made a mad dash towards the front door,

swinging it open in violent way as he passed John along the way towards the set of stairs, still passed out from before. He flew

down each flight of steps, not thinking of each of his landings as his only thought was the safety of whoever was on the other

side of the door to the building. As he finally reached the door, he swiftly unlocked the latches and chains, panting heavily as he

opened the door gently, feeling some weight on the other side of it. He took care to keep whoever it was from falling in as he got

down on his knees and swung the door open. To his surprise, it was a little girl, maybe no older than ten years old who had fallen

onto his lap, ill to an extreme degree from the harsh cold downpour of the night. He sighed softly, stroking her cheek gently as he

felt her cold and near lifeless skin reacting slowly to the warmth of his touch. He looked at her, wondering why this happened, who

left this little girl here, and was he the only the one to hear calls for help. He set her on the wall as he close back the door and

re-locked the latches and chains, slowly turning around as he picked the girl up into his arms, holding her tight to his so that she

might gain some warmth from his body as he carried her and walked slowly, trekking back up the stairs with extreme care.
