Description
This is my absolute first HTTYD fanart!--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flutter Furies are a smaller cousin species of the Night Fury.
Flutter Furies have evolved a camouflaging pattern that makes them resemble butteries or moths. Flutter Furies come in a variety of colorations/patterns and various wing shapes depending on what type of Lepidoptera they base their camouflage on. They are generally slightly smaller than half the size of your average toothless. Moth variations are slightly larger than the butterflies varieties. Since Flutter Furies are smaller in size, they make up for it with their social behavior. Flutter Furies travel in large colonies and generally stay together in large numbers for better defense. Because of this, Flutter Furies are extremely social and don't do very well being solitary. If they get separated from their colony, they will actively seek out companionship from any other creature that is not an eminent danger at first glance. Unfortunately, theirs social behavior is what had gotten many of the slain by vikings in the past.
The Flutter Furies, like most of the fury species out there, are critically endangered. The two main threats they face are hostile takeovers/destruction of their environments/homes and dragon slayers who slay dragons for sport. There are only a few hundred left on the planet and almost none of them are the same kind of butterfly/moth. The thing is....There are many "breeds" of Flutter Furies.... Every kind of different butterfly or moth is a separate "breed" of Flutter Fury. The breed of Flutter Fury illustrated above is a blue swallowtail Fury. Even though this particular species as a whole is only critically endangered, the individual breeds of that species are at near extinction. There are only a handful of each type of breed in existence, if they are even that lucky....For some, there is only one of the same breed. Though it is too late to save some of the other breeds....Some of them are already extinct. And most Flutter Furies mate for life only with their matching breed. This is why it is so hard to bring the species as a whole out of endangerment.
Their flight pattern is quite similar to your average night fury, though they have a very fluttery takeoff.
You can scream in pure unadulterated joy now XD
