The Monster Flu is a magical illness that is supposed to only affect monsters and shouldn't be contagious to humans. But the strain Monster Kid was carrying had mutated and found a way to spread to humans by weakening their souls and temporarily turning them into monsters throughout the infection's duration.

Poor Frisk, it's a good thing it's only temporary.
