Description "...It was supposed to be a Saturday like all the others....get up, grab a quick breakfast, then hop on my bike for an early morning ride along the nature trail near campus.  Unfortunately, what happened THAT Saturday morning would change my life forever..."

"...The ride along the trail had been uneventful, as usual.  I'd finished the uphill part of the trail and, after stopping atop the hill for a quick rest (and to admire the beautiful sunrise), I hopped back on my bike and started making my way along the downhill portion of the trail.  However, as I was quickly accelerating down the rather steep decline, something unexpected happened: a deer emerged from a nearby bush and stopped directly in my path..."

"...Given the speed at which I was accelerating down the hill, I didn't have much time to react, so I did the only thing I could: I tried swerving out of the way.  Now, I'm not exactly an expert on animals, but I do know that slamming into a full-grown deer at a high rate of speed likely wouldn't have ended well for me.  Fortunately, I managed to miss the deer entirely...but in doing so, I ended up going off the trail..."

"...Now, there's a reason I always rode my bike ON the trail: the areas just off the trail were overgrown with roots and vegetation.  So when my bike hit one of those roots, I found myself quickly thrown through the air...only to come to an abrupt stop when my left shin and knee slammed directly into a large tree.  The pain that quickly shot through my body told me the injury was serious, but when I looked down, I immediately knew it was MUCH worse than I thought: my lower left leg was now bent sideways, pointing away from the rest of my body..."

"...Naturally, the first thing I should have done was call emergency services...unfortunately, my phone was thrown some distance away during the crash...and with my leg bent sideways, getting to it wasn't going to be easy....so I did the next best thing: I started shouting for help.  Unfortunately, I knew I was likely wasting my time....it was rare for anyone else to be on the trail that early....and after a few minutes of screaming, I finally gave up on that..."

"...Realizing I didn't have much choice, I started dragging myself along the ground to where my phone was, as its bright red case stood out amongst the vegetation.  It took me a while to slowly drag myself there (mainly because the pain in my leg was so excruciating that I couldn't move more than a few inches at a time without wanting to scream), but I finally got close enough to grab hold of it.  Fortunately, the force of impact from the crash hadn't damaged the phone beyond use (though it did crack the screen), so I promptly called 911 and explained to the dispatcher what had happened..."

"...A few agonizing moments later, the medics arrived, stabilized my leg, and began working on getting me ready for transport to the local hospital...and even though I knew things were pretty bad, I'd soon find out that I had no idea just HOW bad it really was...."
