The cold northern wind rustled the autumn leaves still holding onto the remnants of summer and the warmth of the sunshine slowly fading away. It was as though the forest held its breath, anticipating the next snowfall. Clouds hung heavy in the sky, slowly covering any little opportunity for the sun to break through. The wind would eventually strip the trees bare, and when that happened, the snow would cover the entire landscape, leaving it cold, hostile and hollow. Animals and humans would seek shelter and remain in safety until spring and the return of the sun. Already the once so lively forest was growing more silent each day.

Suddenly a flock of crows rose from their hiding place, loud and alarming anyone nearby that something was moving closer. Out of the frosty fog stepped a large creature. His coat greyish brown, his eyes blue as ice and the fur dense and ragged. His breathing created a cloud of warm air, but although his breath was warm, his presence was cold. Not even the summer sun had been able to thaw the ground he stood on. He was known as Fimbul, half horse half wolf and a descendant of Fenrir. He brought frost and northern winds to turn autumn to winter. His hooves froze the ground he stood on, his movement accompanied by cold winds and clouds heavy with snow.

Winter had arrived.
