It was a bright and clear morning, the air was getting warmer throughout the day, but at 09:00 the temperature was still not above 15'C. It was the perfect conditions to prepare one of the last training sessions before they would all pack their stuff and travel across half of europe to the Royal and Imperials olympic opening ceremony. It was only a short week left before take-off. The butterflies had already many weeks ago started to roam in Nitas stomach, only getting more intense for each day they got closer to the big event. While Syver had occupied the riding arena, Nita found it just as good to use the empty pasture at their neighbours farm. The farmer was an old man with an annoyingly social boarder collie, and he had nothing against her using his field to train as long as she promised to come have a cup of coffee with him and talk about the old days, and maybe also take his dog out for a walk every now an then. The poor dog, probably just as old as the farmer himself, was no longer suited for herding sheeps, but had still the need to get out and sniff some fences.
Nita let Whiskey trot with her neck stretched and lowered, directing the mare in larger circles on both hands untill she was warm and ready to approach some jumps. They started with some small cross fences, just to make sure Whiskey knew where to place her hooves and coordinate her legs. The grass had been cut and removed from the field to optimize the grounding. Whiskey had also got grass studs on her hooves, just as a safety precaution, even though the grass was dry and there was several days since the last rainfall.
It still felt like a blurry dream to Nita, that she and Whiskey were actually competing at the Olympics. I twas the highest, most prestigeous competition any rider could enter, and to be accepted to ride for Nattvik and for Norway was beyond her belief. Yet, as the obstacle was put higher, the realization grew in her, and when the bars had reached aproximately 150cm, Nita felt her heart pump. Yes, now she knew she was actually going, that she was actually gonna jump obstacles up to 160cm in height, just as tall as Whiskey was, and it scared her just as much as it thrilled her.
Without noticing, she had turned Whiskey towards the tall obstacle, her canter picking up speed slightly as they got closer to the fence. Three, two.. Nita counted the mares strides. The mare wanted to rush forward, happy to finally do what she was born to do, but Nita kept her back with a gentle hold on the reins, balancing the tall mare on the last stride. Two, one, leeaaap Nita leaned forward in the stirrups, cheering loudly as they left the ground and reached for the sky.
