That's an interesting way to make your stencils. It sure keeps the underspray at bay.

yeah it makes everything real crisp but one time use so the trade off sucks

I like using the tape because it allows me to put more details in the picture with out having the stencil in one piece, I don't have to worry about "connecting" the image to cut it out. The big drawback is that its a one time thing on each image so I make them on canvas, but the tape makes all the lines very crisp so I'm ok with the tradeoff.

Very carefully. I put down painting tape over my canvas, then I place an image i've photoshopped over the top. Once your there just use something like a clip board to brace the back of the canvas this will help not let the canvas have any give" to it. After that just gently cut through the image with a sharp razor, it should cut through your image on paper and barely slice through the tape. The trick is using the right amount of pressure to cut. I have definately ruined some canvasess when I first strarted but know have the hang of it.
